I have recently bought a table top dishwasher for our house, we have a funny designed kitchen and we couldn't get a full sized one under any of our units so we came across this table top one and never looked back.
Initially my husband was slightly confused at this concept of a dishwasher 'but I thought I did it?' yes you do….once in a blue moon…

The dishwasher we bought doesn't have a drawer for the tablets, it has a groove and we had previously been using dishwasher liquid, however, the liquid wasn't cleaning the dishes very well and we were hesitant to use anything other than liquid. We then came across Fairy Active Bursts from Procter & Gamble. We chose these as opposed to any other brand because it state on the packaging 'If you cannot fit these in your dosing drawer, place in the cutlery rack', so we picked up 2 packs, one of the original, green liquid variety and one of the other lemon liquid variety. We bought 2 small packs, these contain 15 little tablets each (weight 295g), priced at £3.48 each from Tesco online a few weeks ago. There is also a 30 pack available (weight 595g) in both varieties, normally they are priced at £6.78 but in some outlets they are now half price, on Tesco dot come this offer stands until 27 June 2006. In the original variety, there is a 45 tab pack, price currently at £8.98 (weight 890g).

We've established thus far that they are pricey & they come in 2 varieties, so what is Fairy's claim on their newest product on the block & how do Tesco describe the product?

Fairy Say:
The brilliant new Fairy Active Bursts for dishwashers, however, are for hands that don't do dishes. If kitchens are the new living rooms, why should you be tied to the kitchen sink?
All you have to do is pop an all-in-one, no-need-to-unwrap jewel of a Fairy Active Bursts into your dishwasher and get on with being glamorous.

Tesco say: New for Dishwashers. All in one. With glass protection and metal shine. By Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen Manufacturers of Soap and Detergents Procter & Gamble UK, Newcastle upon Tyne. With the cleaning power of fairy specially reformulated for dishwashers.

I was optimistic at these having always used Fairy liquid; basically you get a plastic re-sealable bag with your tablets in. The packaging is a familiar green with red and a see through panel on the front, a tear tab is at the top and ensures you can tear it without damaging the re-seal further below. Inside, you get either 15 or 30 little packages, depending on which pack size you have bought. Each tablet is made of 3 things, the powder side makes up 2/3 of the tablet, and this looks like washing powder with little blue flecks in it. On top of this, you have a squirt of Fairy liquid, either yellow or green and then you have the clever plastic packing holding it all together. These little tabs are nice to look at; you are given confidence that these will provide you with superb cleaning as per the Fairy reputation.

If you have a normal dishwasher, you place these in your dosing drawer as normal, if they are too big, which for some models they appear to be, you can pop these in your cutlery rack, the same for table top dishwashers like mine. I will give those Ciao members with a table top dishwasher a little tip, place this in you cutlery rack but don't put any cutlery in the same section as you put the Active Burst in, it won't work as effectively. Instructions are simple, place in your dosing drawer or cutlery rack, don't get wet, as they will dissolve if they are wet and the whole effect will be ruined .

So load up your dishwasher as normal, pop in your fairy tab and away you go. Obviously normal people don't look in the window of their dishwashers but mine has a little window and I do. I noticed that throughout the wash, which was my normal wash of 40 minutes, the Fairy produced a consistently good lather and appeared to be doing so throughout the wash until my rinse cycle. In my dishwasher I had a dish used for a pasta bake, which had dried, dog & cat food ceramic dishes, Pyrex cooking dishes, a wooden chopping board and stainless steel cutlery.

After my cycle had finished, I opened my dishwasher and the familiar smell of Fairy original liquid was present, but in no way overpowering. My pasta bake dish, which had dried on Homepride bake on came out spotless, the glass wash gleaming, I had expected to have to place the glass back in the dishwasher for a rinse with rinse aid even though these little tablets have a rinse aid within them. I was thoroughly pleased with that. My dog and cat food dishes made of ceramic and were painted came out spotless too without any damage to the painting on them. My wooden chopping board came out, fresh as a daisy, no smell, no marks and no soap marks. Pyrex was also fine and all the marking stayed on, finally my cutlery came out all shiny and new and no water or soap marks were present.

I was very pleased with this result; this was a vast improvement on my last detergent. I was however disappointed with the packaging, I tried to use the re-sealable press to close the pack and it wouldn't close, this too was the same on the 2nd package, so I can only assume they haven't got this formula quite right yet! I now keep mine in an old ice-cream tub and this keeps them dry and therefore, in one piece.

Consistently these little tablets have performed well, tackling all manner of stains and dried on foods, even with curry it gets off all yellow marks in one go. I have yet to find something I have to put back in the dishwasher for a 2nd run, which is what I regularly had to do before these came into our house. I admit to being very pleased with these and they are miles better than a liquid detergent, as I have not used other tablet formulas, I cannot compare the active bursts to brands such as Finish or Glist, although I would imagine these active bursts would provide some competition for these normal tablets. They also give my little dishwasher a nice fragrance masking the stale water smell it used to sport!

I would recommend these little tablets, I do feel, that although expensive, they are worth every penny if you want to put things in once and be confident they are clean, if, however, you don't mind putting dishes in again and again and you don't feel these are worth the price, then maybe these aren't the product for you. I'd love to see these reduced in price though, even though I don't mind the price, some of us will! Overall, a high quality product with a price tag to match but thoroughly worth the expense for confidence in your cleaning, though I'd recommend you have a full load before you use, just to make it worth while!
