I was first introduced to Fake Bake Instant Self Tanning Spray when I attended The Beauty Show at the NEC 2 years ago. This is a show for beauty therapists and only trusted brands and products are sold here, at retail price. When I walked past the Fake Bake stand, I saw someone getting a spray tan, I stayed and watched for a few minutes to see the outcome and when the girl stepped out the tent, she looked amazing. Her tan was even, streak free and natural looking, it was a really beautiful colour. After seeing this I went to the counter to speak to one of the representitives about what products I could purchase and they recommended the Instant Self Tanning Spray, I was told the results were similar to that of the spray tan and you literally just spray it on with no rubbing in or mess, I thought it sounded fantastic, so I purchased a can and I am so glad I did!

Fake Bake is a US company that has taken the self tanning market by storm. The company is relatively new - having only founded in 2002 by Sandra McClumpha, a former salon owner. Even though the brand is still relatively new Fake Bake is one of the most popular self tanning ranges to date and one I will definately stick by.

Is it true? Yes, I would agree, it is simple to apply and does give you the effect of a spray tan and is always streak free. I would also say this fake tan has the most staying power compared to other tans I have used.

It is recommended that you use Fake Bake Skin Smoothie on your skin before you apply any Fake Bake tanning product and this is one extra that a company sells that I would actually use everytime! It really does make a difference to your tan. If you apply it all over your body, concentrating on dry bits such as your elbows, knees, hands and feet it will give them a soft, smooth surface for the Fake Bake to settle on. If you're skin is uneven then the tan will also be. It is also great to use as an every day moisturiser and for moisturising after your tan.
I have attended Fake Bake courses in both Spray Tanning (which produces the same effect as Fake Bake Instant Tanning Spray) and in Rub in Application. From a professional point of view I would definately recommend Fake Bake Instant Tanning Spray every time, and also from a clients point of view my clients prefer this, the reason I no longer offer the Rub in Application at the salon. I like to have confidence in what I am giving my clients and I definately have confidence in this.
~~~~~~~ The can ~~~~~~~
The tan comes in a beautiful gold 207ml can with a spray nozzle covered by a gold cap. Across the front is 'Fake Bake Instant Self Tanning Spray Airbrush'. Although the gold can is beautiful and elegant looking, I must admit the style of the writing makes the product look a little cheap and not so professional. On the back are directions, a list of ingredients, warnings and a little information about the product.
The can is easy to use, although luckily it hasn't happened to me, but quite a few friends have stated that the spray nozzle has broken half way through the usage. This would be annoying but I do know that if this happens, then Fake Bake will replace it free of charge for you.
~~~~~~~~~~ Application ~~~~~~~~~~
Before you start, I would definately recommend that you stand in the shower so any overspray can be washed away and clean over any white surfaces after use.
The first step is to exfoliate, you can use Fake Bakes Body Polish, or your own but you need to make sure it is a soapless and oil free product which will leave no residue on the skin. This is important as residue can affect the outcome of your tan. The second step, although not complusory but I would recommend is to use Fake Bake Skin Smoothie all over your body, concentrating on dry areas such as your knees and elbows. I would recommend before you start spraying to maybe wear a shower cap to avoid the tan discolouring your hair. Then when you are ready to tan yourself, the steps are simple. Hold the can about 12inches from your skin and spray in long even strokes over your body. I usually start and the legs and work my way up. (If a women!) Imagine you are shaving your legs, the way you do that would be the way to apply it, long upward strokes. You will notice a difference in colour straight away, but it does take a few hours to fully develop, so you are best to wait a bit before you apply a second coat. If you are used to doing this though and know how it turns out, then you can apply two coats one after another, but allow each coat to dry before you apply another. To tan your face, spray on sponge or mix some moisturiser and the tan in your hands and apply, but make sure you wash your hands afterwards to avoid staining! As I am used to using this tan alot, I just lightly spray it over my face twice, as I know what colour to expect. If any patches are too dark then just blot some excess off with a tissue.
The product is really easy to use. It takes about 5 minutes to do a full body application and is great to do just before a night out. There is no need to wash it off and although it develops over a few hours slightly you will be a good colour immediately.
~~~~~~~~~~ How it looks ~~~~~~~~~~
You have instant colour after spraying hense the products name but it does still develop over a few hours. The colour is a lovely golden brown, it isn't orange, yellow or even have green tones like some fake tans. It looks really natural. It's also non- comedogenic so it won't clog your pores, a bit problem I find when it comes to applying fake tan, so this one is great. It is suitable for sensitive skin too, which I suffer from, it doesn't irriate it at all. I have ecezma on some areas of my body and I find the tan just sticks to that and looks terrible, so I use mix alot of moisturiser in with some of the tan then apply to the parts of skin with ecezma and gently pat it in. The tan is even and streak free. When you do have a shower, some of the colour will rub off, this is nothing to worry about - it is just the cosmetic bronzer so you can see where you are applying the product. You won't look any lighter and the tan will remain the same.
Alot of fake tans smell awful, and although this has a light lemon fragrance to it, it still smells like fake tan.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Re-applying the product ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can reapply the product as many times as you like. In one night you could do 10 applications if you really wanted, but you will be very dark! I tend to do 2 or 3 applications over my body for the desired effect. I would recommend reapplying every week to keep up your tan and for you to continue having your glowing golden tan.
~~~~~~~~~~ How it lasts ~~~~~~~~~~
I find this tan lasts longer than any others I have used and when it is fading it doesn't turn patchy and show, your skin just discreetly turns paler. I would say this lasts up to 10 days, but this does depend how you care for it. If you don't moisturise, rub when drying and exfoliate it isn't going to last as long as if you did the opposite. A tan will never last as long on your face, as you are always applying make up and removing it and cleansing and toning so I would say this lasts about 3 days on your face, but is simple to reapply on your face. If you really don't like your tan - go swimming as the chlorine strips the tan, great if it has gone really streaky and theres no other way to remove it, another thing that helps to remove it is toner. If you want to continue using the tan, when it begins to come to the end of the 7-10 days I would recommend reapplying it before it fades. This makes it easier and you don't have to apply as much, you are just topping it up.
I usually use this once or twice a week and that lasts me about 3 months, obviously the amount you use will determine how long it exactly lasts.
I try and purchase this from beauty shows at the NEC and at Excel for £10, but unless you are a beauty therapist you won't be able to do this. So another site I use to purchase inbetween these shows is www.lookfantastic.com for £22.91,and you will get a 207ml can for this but you will also have to pay postage and packaging of about £2.00 and they have really quick delivery. I use this website as they are authorised Fake Bake stockists. You can also purchase this on Fake Bakes website and various other websites, ebay and Fake Bake salons, but I haven't seen many of them around the UK.

This is the perfect fake tan, it is quick, simple and easy to use - it takes five minutes to apply and you are left with the most even, natural looking colour a fake tan can give you. I would definately recommend this to anyone looking for a bit of colour.
