I am one of those people who hates the fact that I live in a cold and gloomy place (Scotland) I love to be tanned but I have heard so many scary stories about using tanning beds that I avoid them at all costs!
This means that my only options for getting a tan are to go on holiday (not so practical!) or to use fake tan. However I have had far too many experiences where I turn a glowing orange/yellow as opposed to a sun kissed brown.
I tried fake bake because I decided I wanted to try something a little bit more expensive than my previous fake tans. I hadn't really heard a lot about it but when I tested a variety of the fake tans on offer in Harvey Nichols fake bake seemed to be the one that suited me the best.
I first tried the fake bake airbrush tan which I think was around £25. Although it did give a beautifully genuine looking tan it was quite difficult to apply the product evenly as it didn't always spray out of the bottle in a constant stream.
However I really liked the colour that I got from the airbrush tan because it wasn't the orange or yellow colour that many of the cheaper tans create. It was also good because the tan has an indicator brown colour so that you know how the tan will look while you are applying it, rather than hours later.
Once I had finished with the airbrush bottle I decided that it was slightly too difficult to apply and therefore decided I would test some more brands to see the result I gained. I tried the St Tropez spray on tan and again I felt that I turned a rather unattractive colour.
So I was back to fake bake but this time I decided to buy the lotion as opposed to the spray. This was definitely the right decision because I love it. It is far easier to apply and it lasts far longer than the airbrush tan. It was also a couple of pounds cheaper (not a lot but every little helps!) You get application gloves which mean that you are able to prevent your hands from becoming 10 times darker than the rest of your body.
The tan is instant an although the top coat is simply an indicator if I am going out to clubs then I often find that I will simply put the tan on a couple of hours later because I tend to look an acceptable colour even with the indicator still on.
The tan lasts for usually around a week at its best and it is easy to maintain so I dont find myself turning patchy. I can simply re-apply as necessary or let the tan fade with the help of regular exfoliation, whichever suits.
However I must say that if you like a more subtle tan then this might not be the best product for you. Although you can apply less of the tan it tends to turn out with less of an even finish if you do so. The results are usually quite dark and therefore may not suit paler skin, but I am not sure since I am not generally pale skinned myself.
The other problem is that you really should leave the tan on overnight if you want a good, lasting finish and this will mean sleeping in your sheets still wearing the indicator colour over the top. This can often mean that your sheets will turn somewhat brown but I have experienced this with quite a few tanning products and it does wash out easily.
In all I would say that from my personal experience fake bake is the best tanning product currently on the market. Although it is more expensive than some products available, this is because it is a superior quality and I would say that it is a worthwhile investment. It can take some getting used to but once you have used it a couple times it is easy to create your desired look and shading, perfect for looking your best when going out!
