I've always been happy using my usual L'Oreal tan, but since coming onto Ciao I have become curious about Fake Bake, after reading a few positive and negative reviews I decided to buy it and see for myself. I was shocked to find it is sold for around £25 for a 170ml bottle. But I had a search on the internet and found it at cheapest for £15 from an online tanning shop which is doing an offer.

Packaging

The tan comes in a dark brown bottle with gold writing. The bottle is nice but not as exciting looking as I expected from an expensive brand. There is a detailed explanation on the back of the bottle on how to use the tan. It advises you to exfoliate and moisturise right before using the tan, to always use gloves when applying, then to allow it to dry for 20 minutes before dressing or going to bed. It continues to advise that during week 2 you exfoliate twice to keep the tan going. I found the instructions helpful and they made me feel a bit better about using the tan.
Application

I wouldn't necessarily use my usual tan right before bed but I had read this one is better to use before bed as it does leave a colour which can rub off on your clothes. So I had a shower and exfoliated, and applied moisturiser. I had already bought some disposable gloves which I kept on the whole time.
The tan is a black colour and when I was rubbing it in it was like rubbing mud into my skin! I made sure I rubbed it in evenly which took quite a while. I also applied it to my face in exactly the same way. I instantly looked really dark and almost a bit grubby looking, but I had read that the colour you see is actually just a colour guide so you can see where you are putting it, and that this doesn't actually represent the end result.
The tan smelt really strong but not quite like other ones I have used. It was more like a really strong old woman's perfume, I think this smell was more of a perfume cover up for the real smell though. I found once it had sunk in you couldn't really smell it though.
Results

The next day I got up and had a shower straight away to wash off the guide colour. I had heard not to use harsh soap the day after so I just rinsed it off with clean water.
I was quite pleased with the results, the tan was a nice golden colour which certainly didn't look orange. It wasn't at all streaky and looked more natural than other tanning lotions I have tried. The only problem was it wasn't as dark as I had imagined. It looked like I had been sunbathing a bit but I wanted something more extreme. Determined not to give up on it I ended up reapplying it that day and leaving it on for the day. This gave a slightly stronger colour which I was satisfied with.
It did say on the back of the bottle that the tan can be reapplied as many times as you like to achieve the desired colour, so maybe this is normal.
I applied the tan 2 days ago and the colour is still there and does seem to be staying.
Overall Opinion

I really like the fact that the colour is so natural looking and not orange but I'm not sure if I could be bothered applying a few layers of the tan each time when I can use my usual tan only once (despite the colour not being as natural looking) Also it does take a lot longer to apply which has put me off slightly as I prefer a tan you can quickly apply anytime. Also because of the colour guide it does leave your bed sheets in a mess.
