The first thing to note about this game is it is made by BETHESDA...the genius' behind the Elder Scrolls brand. So for anyone that has played the ps3 classic "Oblivion", you will instantly feel at home with the controls.
The game starts with an elaborate tutorial, taking you from child birth (which allows you to create your physical appearance along with the kind of person you are) all the way up to adulthood, when an incident forces you to leave the safety and comfort of your home...Vault 101.
At this point the game truely begins, and from the moment you step out from the underground fallout shelter, you will be amazed at the amount of detail put into creating an anihilated Washington Dc. Unlike Oblivion, there are no scenic panaramas, or long green fields to cross. Instead it is just rubble and destruction as far as the eye can see. But don't let this fool you into thinking that the view gets stale. It doesn't, and BETHESDA have done a great job in making the collapsed shell of the state capital intriguing to rummage through.
Now you can't review this game without mentioning the VATS system, which is the combat system used to kill the various mutants and raiders throughout the game. Weapons in Fallout 3 generally consist of; melee weapons (ranging from rolling pins to chainsaws), explosives, small arms, big arms and energy weapons, which all can be used with just a simple push of the R1 button. But, an additional aspect is brought into play when you push the R2 button, opening up the VTAS system. The game screen instantly freezes, and your target is identified, with it's limbs and head highlighted. By selecting any of these (limb shots can render your opponent crippled or unabale to return fire, whereas head shotys can just render them headless!) you are then treated to a slow motion bullet speeding towards them and ripping through them in gruesome detail. The system itself works very well and is instantly easy to grasp. It also works well as an aid to what is around you, as you do spend most of your time carefully sneaking through derelict buildings, unaware of what is creeping up on you.
In mentioning the sneaking, a lot of the other abilities from Oblivion are revived in this game too. Pick-pocketing, lock-picking, bartering, speechcraft...along with a few new one's. (Computer hacking, bomb disposal, building new weapons).
As for the quests and tasks, the game is very open-ended and sand-boxed, leaving you free to make your own decisions in where you go and what you do (note: some things you choose to do will affect your karma rating and allow or disallow you access to certain people in the game). My only criticism is that unlike Oblivion, once you finish the final task, you are then unable to continue to explore the rest of the capital wasteland.
In playing through the game a few times, i have also noticed that it is very easy to skip large chunks of the game, simply by wandering into a place before the storyline intends you to. However, the game is fun, and you can still spend endless hours exploring the devastated city buildings. If you have played Oblivion though, and are looking for a clone...you may be disappointed at the games lifespan.
