I had never really been a fan of RPGs. I always thought they were boring because of the large amount of time spent exploring and talking to people, when I just wanted to get straight into the action. At least that was until I played Fallout 3.

So a bit of background on the story. In the year 2077, after a long running war between the USA and China, the world is devastated by nuclear bombs. Whole cities were destroyed. Millions of people were killed and civilisation came to a stand-still.

Cut to the year 2277. Your player (which you can fully customise) is living in Vault 101. One of the many vaults built underground to keep its inhabitants safe from the outside world. That is until you find out your father (who is your only living parent) has escaped the vault and gone to the outside world, without explaining why to you. So you decide to follow after him and venture out to where no-one from Vault 101 was ever supposed to go.

It is out in 'The Capital Wasteland', as it is known, that your adventure will take place. It is a rocky, barren area with very little natural life. The people on the surface that you meet will have been subjected to very large amounts of radiation and this is evident when you look at many of them. A lot of the people in the Capital Wasteland a friendly and won't harm you, that is until you shoot them, however you will come across other inhabitants who are slightly more hostile. There are raiders who are normal humans but have become incredibly criminal; there are mercenaries who have been sent out to kill you; and there are also Super Mutants who were once human but have since been exposed to massive amounts of radiation, which has caused them to look big, green and ogre-looking.

Out here you will be able to discover literally hundreds of locations to explore, which all have a unique look and atmosphere to them and many of these will have occupants.

Now the main mission of the game is to find your dad and learn why he left you in the vault, however there are loads of side-quests that can totally distract you from this. These are all varied and very enjoyable to complete.

Each time you complete a mission - as well as kill someone, pick a lock or hack a computer - you earn XP. This then goes towards you levelling up. Each time you level-up you get to choose a new perk which have various useful benefits. You also increase your skills areas which range from small guns to lockpicking. It is probably the most easy to understand and effective levelling-up system I have ever seen in a game.

~Story~
I have seen in some places that Fallout 3's story has been criticised but I don't agree with that at all. I think just the main part of the story is fascinating and shows a great deal of imagination. Factor in the histories of the settlements and each individuals' personal story and it is magnificently in-depth.

~Gameplay~
The use of the Pip-Boy 3000 as a menu screen I think works really well and is really simple to use. Combat is great and the new VATS system which is used to shoot at an individual body part of an enemy is just brilliant. Conversations are always varied and exciting, and every single person in the Wasteland is different.

~Sound~
The world still has all the cultural trends of the 50s which is reflected by the soundtrack. Songs are played over Galaxy News Radio, which you can always listen to through your Pip-Boy 3000. It really surprised me how much I enjoyed listening to these songs and they really suited the game's style.
The character voices are excellent. Every person in the Wasteland has their own voice and you can have full conversations with loads of them.

~Visuals~
This, unfortunately, is the own part that I was slightly disappointed by in Fallout 3. When you look out over the massive Wasteland and you can see for miles ahead of you it really is stunning. As are a lot of the characters. However, it is when you get close up to objects, such as rocks and buildings that they are not so good. The textures are often off and just not realistic. I'm sure this is because of the sheer size of the map though, as for them to create every single object in great detail for an area so large they would surely have to have used multiple discs.

~Summary~
So, in conclusion Fallout 3 is easily the best RPG I have ever played and surely a contender for my best ever game full stop. It is a must-buy for any Xbox 360 owner. You will get many, many hours of enjoyment out of this game.
