My youngest still has accidents and pees on the floor but he is not even two years old yet so I think we can forgive that. The expence of nappies and all the extras for toilet training has certainly focused me more to suggesting to people to use the toilet rather than anything else.

I have two gorgeous boys and although when they are older no doubt will be pointing their "wee man" at the side of the toilet instead of down it.I am just now encouraging them to sit on the toilet like a girl. I know they are not confused about their sex it just helps them to aim in the right place as safely as possible. The only downfall in being is the falling down the toilet.
I tried a potty with my oldest son ( who will be 3 this March) and found that it was mostly turned upside down so he could get in to the fridge easier. I decided potty training was not quite the best idea for him. After that I decided for my youngest I would not even go through the hassle.
So back to the familly toilet. The best way I found with getting them on to this wonderful idea was to allow them to flush afterwards. That kept them amused for long enough. Also my boys love water so getting to wash their hands after it each time encouraged them to go. This did for a while become a game as they would be peeing all day so they could flush and wash their hands often.
It soon wore off and they happily use the toilet as it should be and as long as I am there to watch over them they no longer fall down the toilet. Although they did climb in it often enough to splash in the water but it has not happened in a while, fingers crossed it stays that way.
So for me potty training was out, peeing on the floor and in the family toilet was in. Encouragement goes along way in helping children.
My youngest still has accidents and pees on the floor but he is not even two years old yet so I think we can forgive that. The expence of nappies and all the extras for toilet training has certainly focused me more to suggesting to people to use the toilet rather than anything else.
Also toilet roll is cheaper than baby wipes and those little bums use a lot less. I did have to put the toilet roll up high to stop them flushing it away just to get the carboard roll in the middle, but they sang through it lovely. Doo doo do doo do.
Advantages: No mess to clean up afterwards. Disadvantages: Having to supervise as they can fall down the toilet!
I started potty training my son when he was around 18months. Ideally I wanted to start earlier but prior to that we were in the middle of planning our wedding and honeymoon so I had to wait till we got back before we started properly. I got conflicting advice when I first started which didn't help. My mum was telling me to put him on the toilet straight away but my mum-in-law was telling me to use a potty. What was I to do? I ended up getting a potty ... ...duck thingy for upstairs. It was a seat which fitted over the normal standard toilet seat but had the head of a duck on the front. My son took to the potty straight away but he took a while to get used to the 'Toilet Duck' as he was scared of it. Bless him! When he did get the hang of it it was brilliant. No more cleaning up messy poo. Just a flush and it was gone. As he got older I had the problem of him firing his wee up so after a couple of months ...

Advantages: Easy, permanent toilet seat Disadvantages: Expensive, means replacing the adult seat too.
...with the advent of the Family Seat, which I bought from the Mothercare catalogue.
It is an ingenious design - a standard adult seat with an integral child sized seat which fits into the lid when not in use. The two seats and the lid fit together on hinges, and it is easy to use whether you are are 3 or 83.
Costing £30, it isn't the cheapest toilet seat, but neither is it the most expensive. However, it is emimently practical for a growing family, ...

Advantages: easy for child to pull up and down Disadvantages: not an easy grip
When i first started toilet traing my 3 year old i had a ditachable seat and i found that it was hard to lift on and off and if i was busy and my child needed to toilet he would have to wait for me to attach the seat.
At least with this already attached he was then able to pull the seat down ready for himself.
This made my child more confident and independant about using the toilet. He knows that this is his special seat which then makes the whole thing of toilet training easier which is good and more laid back.
This is also good because sometimes i found that my child would make a mess on the seat and so it was much easier to clean as it just lifts up and down. where as i used to have to struggle to pull ditachable seat off.
very pleased with this item and helped alot with the whole ordeal of potty training.
The price is very ...
Advantages: Looks good, easy to use and cuts out on clutter. Disadvantages: Can chip, rub and come apart but only if mistreated!
I have been meaning to do a review on this innovative product for ages and, for once, my procrastination means that I should now be able to give a more complete review as during this time a couple more 'problems' have arisen which may be of interest to you.
The familytoiletseat is a standard toiletseat with a smaller, trainer seat for toddlers/young children in the toilet lid. When you lift the toilet lid, the trainer seat can be easily released by turning a little knob and, hey-presto, a smaller version of the adult seat folds down!
When I first saw this product in 2003, I was so impressed by it that I bought it - before I was even pregnant! We were trying for our first baby and after another month of no success I decided to cheer myself up by buying a lovely crib that I had had my eye on for ages and while flicking through ...
Advantages: steady, secure, easy to use, hygenic, Disadvantages: none!
My youngest son has mild cerebral palsy, so we were looking for a seat that would give him the very best security when sitting on the loo. We have a grab rail to one side of the toilet and he was finding the usual child seats too unsteady, which made him afraid to even sit on them.
When we fitted this seat we were very impressed, and so was he!!! Its so easy to use and such a simple idea! More hygenic also in that you don't end up with a childs seat lying on the floor next to the toilet.
Even our OT and Physiotherapist have started to reccomend them to other parents.
As a mobility aid as well as an everyday family essential, this seat outshines every other kids toiletseat on the market. ...
