Stone 'Fantastic Beasts and where to find them' is an extensive introduction to the magical beasts that exist in the magical non-Muggle world. Some of the animals featured in the A-Z you will have already met in the existing Harry Potter books: for example Hippogriff Flobberworm Kappa - others you certainly won't: read on to find out exactly what a Chizpurfle is why there are so few Erumpents or why one should always beware of the sinister Lethifold As Albus Dumbledore says in his introduction this set text book by Newt Scamander has given the perfect grounding to many a Hogwarts student. It will be helpful to all Muggles out there too On reading the book you will also find that Harry Ron and (in one instance) Hermione - couldn't resist grafittiing the book and adding their own personal hand-written opinions.

Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them is quite simply an alphabetical listing of magical creatures.
Each beast is giving a classification (his helps the reader understand what level of magic is required to control the beast); a description of the beast; the habits and habitats of the beast; the charms that can be used against the beast. The writing is enjoyable, while trying to give the illusion of being a textbook it still has enough of J K Rowling’s humour in it to make it fairly funny. Harry Potter has to be the biggest phenomenon to hit the bookshelves and movie theaters for decades. With its appeal to a wide audience, that includes adults as well as children all around the world, it seems to be the ideal vehicle to gain millions of pounds for charity by combining the witty talents of J K Rowlings with perhaps one of my favourite TV Charities “Red Nose Day’.
This is an ingenious fund raiser that not only will raise money but also helps those devote Potter fans have a little fix of Potterism between books four and five. The combination of using one of the most popular books in existence (aside from the Bible!), and allowing the reader to have a view of the wizarding world from Harry’s eyes by creating a ‘text book’ is very innovative.
<The ‘textbook’>
Imagine that you are attending Hogwart’s school for wizardry – you have been provided a list of books that you will require when you attend the school. One of these books just happens to be ‘Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them’ – well you are lucky, you have also managed to find the very same book that Harry Potter has allowed to be reproduced (scribbling and all) for you.
The beasts range from the dangerous (i.e. dragon - including the varieties found in the fourth book) to the mischievous (Gnomes).
The writing is enjoyable, while trying to give the illusion of being a textbook it still has enough of J K Rowling’s humour in it to make it fairly funny. Harry himself has added his own scribbling to the book giving us an insight into Harry that perhaps isn’t evident from the regular books – it turns out that Harry and Ron really are more mischievous than I thought possible, as well as possessing a large amount of sarcasm (the comment about Hagrid never having read this book is particularly mean!)
There is a section in the book explaining how the different beasts are categorized and how the Ministry for Control of Magical beasts works, this does add a little interest.
<The book>
While the book is interesting and draws much from mythology and much from J K Rowling’s imagination, I don’t think I would have bought it if Comic Relief hadn’t been involved. While it gives us information on the world of Harry Potter it doesn’t elaborate on the story. Perhaps the most entertaining part of the book is the scribbling, which varies from speculation about Hagrid and whether he’s read this textbook, to a game of hang man. (Hermione has even added her own scribbling in her own style)
The book does have many illustrations to back up the descriptions, but I found that most of these were very poor and didn’t really convey the descriptions very well. The combination of all the different information is useful allowing the reader to get a fairly well informed look at each creature or beast in the book.
<Conclusion>
I have no doubt that most children will love to own this book even if they don’t really read it! It is a part of the Harry Potter world and allows them to identify more with the world and the creatures in that world. It also helps children when ‘role playing’ in that world as they have their own real text books.
The book in itself is nothing special but as it is for a special cause then I do not mind the three pounds (or so) that it cost me. (I have seen these books sold without the Comic relief logo recently and wonder if the money continues to go to the charity – perhaps someone can answer this for me – the two ‘text books’ are included together)

Review of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - J.K. Rowling
Advantages: It's Harry Potter, it's written by Rowling, and the proceeds go to Comic Relief Disadvantages: It's very thin and written in an unamusing style
Do you know the difference between an acromantula and a Horklump? No? Well, you'd better rush out and buy a copy of 'Fantastical Beasts and Where to find then' by that world-renowned expert Newt Scamander.
This book, as every Harry Potter who is worth their salt knows, is one of the set books required to be read by all Hogwarts students, and thanks to J.K.Rowling we are now able to read this famous set book, owned by none-other than Harry himself.
... ...take a whole year to study this?) has been released to coincide with Red Nose Day, and the proceeds of the £2.50 book, which is available for a limited time in bookstores and Sainsbury's, go to Comic Relief (don't worry I saw loads left in WHSmith).
Written by J. K. Rowling along with a copy of Quidditch through the Ages, this probably explains why we will be waiting for quite a few more months before we see Harry Potter V.
However, this will have ...

...not read Harry Potter books, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them will probably not make very much sense. To those, like myself, who love Harry Potter, reading the book will fill in little gaps missed out by the main books.
J.K.Rowling wrote the Harry Potter series, a story about a young boy Wizard and his adventures, fighting against the evil Lord Voldemort.

Fantastic Beasts and where to find them, on first glance looks like a small text book, and is supposed to be written by Newt Scamander, a wizard who has spent his life working with such creatures. J.K.Rowling and Comic Relief have teamed together to bring us an exact copy of Harry Potter’s text book - complete with property sticker on the inside, and humorous graffiti dotted throughout but Harry and his best friend Ron.

...that his own copy of Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them, can be reproduced on a mass basis for muggles. So if you find doodles in your newly purchased book, do not take it back to the shop they are supposed to be there.

Advantages: it's new material, could be worth something one day, money goes towards charity Disadvantages: dull and boring
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the second spin-off of sorts to the best-selling Harry Potter books. While fans waited for the fifth book in the series to be released, author JK Rowling released two short books to raise money for Comic Relief - Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through the Ages. Just like I told you in my opinion of Quidditch Through the Ages, Comic Relief uses comedy and general entertainment to raise ... ...like Quidditch Through The Ages, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is presented in the form of a Hogwarts text book. But, this book is slightly different, because it is Harry's own property, and not a library book like Quidditch Through The Ages. Albus Dumbledore, Head-Master of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, writes the foreword to this special edition of the book. He decided to borrow Harry's copy of the book, and have it copied ...

Advantages: A fabulous gem Disadvantages: Too short!
Now I suppose the Ciao people might want to point out that according to the cover this book is in fact by one Newt Seamander and not JK Rowling at all, but even I think you can take this whole Harry Potter thing a bit too far. Essentially, this is Rowling's contribution to Comic Relief and it's only 42 pages long so hardly qualifies as a real book, but given it's place in the Potter mythology it more than deserves a review as it is a true gem.
Right. ... ...school, Hogwarts, requires its pupils to have set texts, several of which are referred to by Rowling in the course of the books. This is one of them. Whether it was Rowling or some BBC bod I have no idea, but someone had the brainwave of asking her to produce one or two of these books to publish and sell for Comic Relief as a kind of Potter spin-off. Two have been published of which this is one (the other is Quiddich Through The Ages). Now keen Potter ...

Advantages: Two fantastic books Disadvantages: None i know of
Both "Quidditch through the Ages" and "FantasticBeasts and wheretofindthem" are fantastic books written by JKRowling, for the TRUE Potter fanatics. If you don't already own them then get a grip and buy them. Most of all, jKR wrote these to raise money for Comic Relief - even more reason to invest.
Quidditch through the Ages
The first book in the pack gives a very detailed analysis of the complex game of Quidditch, describing Quidditch history, historic games, rules and tricks including the 'sloth grip roll' (you'll have to buy it tofind out what it is). It's a superb reference book.

in South Gloucestershire. She enjoyed writing fantasy stories from a young age, and it was in 1990 when the idea for a story about a school for wizards came into her mind, whilst on a delayed train. It was in 1996 by the time her manuscript for the first Harry Potter book was accepted to be published, but was told that this would not be a huge thing (oh how wrong they were!). From then, once published in 1997, the world has been sweeped with Potty-madness! These books have sold over 400 million copies, and have won Rowling many awards.
In addition to the main series, Rowling has also written several other books about Hogwarts and its connections, including FantasticBeasts and WhereToFindThem, and Quidditch Through The Ages.
