Never was a curse more welcome!
Review of Interesting Times - Terry Pratchett by atytyut2434

Advantages: Cohen & Rincewind!
Disadvantages: Overly long for the sake of it in places

Get yourself to China! Or at least Ths Discworld equivalent known as The Aurient because gold (chemical symbol AU, Oh look a Chemistry related joke!) is incredibly common there. Someone has written a very revolutionary book called "What I did on my holidays" and its inspiring some of the citizens of The Counterweight Continent are of a mind that their leaders need to be replaced and its time for a revolution. Sadly this revolution has been started ...
...anything else) but being the simple minded person he is he's not even aware he started a revolution. Throw in Cohen The Barbarian & his Golden Horde (most of whom are so old they should be dead) and a teahcer trying to teach them manners & etiquette to no avail. With some magical travelling, barking dogs and extremely funny pictograms we get a Pratchett styled twist on the Land Of The Rising Sun. ... Read review

Before Discworld was, there was Strata...
Review of Strata - Terry Pratchett by CaptainDisaster

Advantages: Quite funny and insightful, pretty good characters, inventice
Disadvantages: The Discworld concept just doesn't work as well in a sci-fi setting, Pratchett's writing style not fully developed at this stage

...about time you did). But Strata is an early exploration of that idea and, while I don't think it's up to the standard of the majority of the Discworld novels, it's still good and is basically required reading for Pratchett fans. The story centres around Kin Arad, a woman over 200 years old (surgical techniques are pretty advanced and people are paid by The Company in "days" rather than cash), who works for the afore-mentioned "Company". This organisation ...
...Unlike the Discworld series, Strata is very much a science fiction books (albeit with a couple of fantasy elements), and while it's a good book as is stands, it's also easy to see why Pratchett opted to go for a fantasy setting for the eventual series. Discworld aficionados will recognise certain familiar elements - for instance, there is a pub called The Broken Drum on one of the planets. As sci-fi comedies go it is a good one, though never really ... Read review

Three Funny Fantasies
Review of The City Watch Trilogy - Terry Pratchett by slipknotsdc

Advantages: Funny, very original and good value for money
Disadvantages: Difficult to understand if new to discworld

...if you are new to the discworld series, this review may sound a bit strange. Discworld is a fantasy series, but instead of the usual stories in this genre (e.g. barbarian saves tribe of half-naked women from the grips of evil wizard with ancient sword . . . etc), it is funny. Some of the key figures in Pratchett’s mental world include an orang-utan librarian, death (himself, complete with scythe and granddaughter), the hogfather (a fat bearded guy ...
...just say slightly odd. Well, the actual world it is set in (the discworld) is a flat disc of a world, held up by four gigantic elephants, on the back of an enormous (as in the size of a planet) turtle called the Great A’tuin. It is difficult to explain it all, so I am going to assume that the person reading this knows all about it from previous books (if you do not, the series starts with ‘The Colour of Magic’, and you learn to understand as you ... One of the greatest books of all time
Review of Magician - Raymond E. Feist by molebert

Advantages: Well Written, Empathetic characters, Epic storyline
Disadvantages: Long, slow build up

This book easily ranks among the greatest fantasy books of all time, and as a testiment to this, I have already read this book at least five times already, with plans to do so again in the not to distant future. The easy writing style used by Raymond E. Feist not only transports you into the twin worlds of Kelewan and Midkemia, but grabs and maintains your interest throughout what is an epic story. I found I connected and empathised easily with ...
...characters were well defined and written. The world created within these pages is well defined and described, and even though it follows many generic fantasy stereotypes, the characters, story and depth of information combine to exceed the generic fare offered by many within this genre. Although Raymond E. Feist wrote several sequels and prequels, and although some are quite good, this book should always be considered the best of them. ... Read review

You're a wizard Harry!
Review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) - J. K. Rowling by midpikyrozziy

Advantages: Beautifully imaginative, adventurous, fast-paced tale
Disadvantages: That it has to end at Book 7!

Introduction Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the final installment of the world famous Harry Potter series, from rags-to-riches author J.K Rowlings, who originally wrote the first books on napkins when she was a single mother, struggling to prosper economically. The story so far After James and Lily Potter are killed by dark wizard 'Lord Voldemort', (an evil man who attempts to kill anyone who isn't a pure-blood - 100% magical ...
...Years later, the orphaned Harry is living with his Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and cousin Dudley. They don't treat him well, always favoring Dudley over him. However, when mysterious letters arrive telling Harry he is a wizard, he finds out that he is to go to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, abandoning his Muggle (non-magical) upbringing. At Hogwarts, Harry learns all about magic and wizards, and becomes an accomplished wizard, good friends ... Read review
