The Grey Man will get you...
Review of Waylander III: Hero in the Shadows - David Gemmell by
Fearghul
Advantages: Outstanding characters and excellent plot
Disadvantages: Closely tied to earlier novels.
...have read the previous two Waylander novels. You will regret not reading them first.
With that out of the way, this novel is on par with the brilliance of the first Waylander novel and contains scenes that rival the excellent opening of that first book.
Gemmell has an excellent sense of style, a certain elan that gives his work a compelling quality. His writing style is economical, letting events speak for themselves rather than leading the reader ... ...sense of closure to the waylander series of novels and does stand well on its own as a seperate book, but is simply stunning when taken as part of the trilogy. Any who enjoys the work of Gemmell will love this...those who are new to his works however are recommended to start with Waylander or Legend rather than this... ...

Please Your Inner Demon - Read This!
Review of Dark Moon - David Gemmell by
VickyVickster
Advantages: Excellent plot, believeable characters, great story.
Disadvantages: To a book by Gemmell? Are you serious? ;)
...is one of those books. Dark Moon is up there as one of my very favourite books by this author and in fact one of my favourites ever. This is about the fourth time I have read it and every time I read it I am sucked in to the story and get totally absorbed into the plot. So what makes Dark Moon so good? Read on and you’ll see. Tarantio is a soldier in the army. In fact he’s not sure which duke he is fighting for from one day to the next as he is a ... ...at war over a mysterious dark pearl left when the Eldarin, a highly powerful race, disappeared one day without a trace, well almost. The only thing left was the pearl. Anyhow Duke Sirano of Romark currently has the pearl and is working on releasing it’s magical powers (It was left by a race of sorcerers so it must be magic and powerful right?) Whilst the war wages on. One night they make a breakthrough and as the pearl is broken a great dark moon ...

Scuba wants to find Atlantis
Review of Atlantis - David Gibbins by
scuba_angel
Advantages: decent read
Disadvantages: not the best
...draw comparisons with Clive Cusslers, Atlantis Found, there are two main leads one of whom is a technical buff, the men seem to be one caucasian and the other darker skinned (in Cusslers books Al Giordino is latino, while Costas seems to have Greek ancestry), both refer regularly to favourite drinks, in this it is gin and tonic in Cusslers work it is tequila. These things seem also to define the characters in Atlantis as British, though I dont remember ... ...Found this feels more overtly American since is a more typically American trait to drink Tequila. The descriptions of the underwater scenes and use of technology feels for the most part fairly realistic even if the coincidences that help the plot fit together pretty huge. The scientific knowledge feels reasonably accurate allowing for a few occasions when it may not be strictly accurate. The way this is written is fast paced and easy to follow, there ...

Too High a Price
Review of The Long Price: Shadow and Betrayal - Daniel Abraham by
Soho_Black
Advantages: Some decent basic ideas
Disadvantages: Very slow paced and quite formal in tone
...is an omnibus volume of the first two parts of this quartet: "A Shadow in Summer" and "A Betrayal in Winter".
The world we are introduced to is largely controlled by The Cities of the Khaiem; city states ruled by a controlling family headed by the Khai. The reason for their power is that each has an andat; a magical being created and bound by thought and word, each controlled by the poet who has bound them. These andat are feared by many of the ... ...of the Khaiem from being attacked, as their enemies fear the retribution that could follow, such is their power.
In the first part of the quartet, "A Shadow in Summer", the Galts have seen a way to unsettle the city of Saraykhet, by disposing of the poet Heshai. They and the andat, Seedless, have found Heshai's weak point and plan to take advantage of it. However, plans are interrupted by an unlikely group; an elderly overseer along with a trainee ...

Assassins Apprentice - A book that offers so much
Review of The Farseer 1.Assassin's Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy) - Robin Hobb by
kohtera4
Advantages: Excellent story line, full of adventure. Lead Character that you cant help but love
Disadvantages: Writting style is narrative - so people may not give a chance to this book. Shame!!!
The first book of the FarSeer Trilogy. Assassin's Apprentice introduces us to the young Fitz Farsser a illigitimate heir to the throne. Sounds like a stroke of luck however this is anything but fortunate for young Fitz as he is dragged into a world of court intrigue, back stabbing, and danger. Confronted by people that would do all within their power to make sure that a Royal bastard never reaches the throne. This is a tale of coming of age, about ... ...i would enjoy it after the first few pages - not because the pages would not hold my intrest but because Hobb went out on a limb and did somthing that is still a rareity in the fantasy world, she wrote this as a narrative of sorts. with all the events that you read about having happened already and the narrator is recapping the events of his life. Hobb was brave to do this as this style of writting is not common for this genre. However please dont ...
