Far out wisdom.
Review of The Wit and Wisdom of Discworld - Terry Pratchett by
Coloneljohn
Advantages: Entertainment for students and populous alike
Disadvantages: May not be for everybody, but it should be.
...is based on some of the fantasy works of Mr T Pratchett.
As that great and distinguished scribe and scholar Mr T. Pratchett has told us "Wisdom always seems wiser when it comes from far away." Well this must be very wise as it comes to us all the way from The Discworld itself.
This is a compilation of many humorous sayings and quotations from the many books that have introduced us to the myriad delights of The Discworld.
The Discworld, as I am ... ...disc shaped world carried on the backs of four large elephants that in turn are carried on the back of a gigantic space going turtle. This world has its own seasons and population who resemble the population of our roundworld in many surprising ways. Here you can meet Heroes and Villains, Wizards and Witches, Gods and Daemons, and a rather large variety of quite ordinary seeming peoples. Here is a world that is both strange and familiar at the same ...

His drak materials box set
Review of His Dark Materials Boxed set (His Dark Materials) - Philip Pullman by
C-John
Advantages: Best books i have ever read!
Disadvantages: They had to end at book 3
What can i say.. I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN!!
it was so in depth with an amazing plot and character detail that you could really imagine being there with the characters in a living breathing world.
After that i went and bought this box set and have re-read the the 3 books again and again!
Although marketed at children i would say adults would get far more from the book as it covers many difficult issues such as religion and authority and contains ...

A true work of Sorcery
Review of Polgara The Sorceress - David Eddings by
demonbarak
Advantages: fantastic quality of writing
Disadvantages: none!!
...- and questions about what Polgara was doing from time to time, which basically forces Ce'Nedra to come and demand the rest of the story.
So, from before her birth, through her early years, the marriage of her sister and subsequent death, falling in love and fighting thruogh wars, losing her lover, and puberty, and through it all, safeguarding the line of Riva.
Polgara's story is often heartwrenching - I don't mind admitting that the quality of ... ...that Leigh is coming into her own on this story - its occasionally hilarious as well, as the trademark Eddings humour shows through.
This isn't just Polgara's story, its the story of kingdoms rising and falling, its the story of the study of medicine, and mostly its the counterpart study of human nature to Belgarath.
Once I started this one, i literally couldn't stop reading, its a superbly written book with truly startling characters, and it just ...

Perfection in written form!
Review of Belgarath The Sorcerer - David Eddings by
demonbarak
Advantages: Incredibly well written
Disadvantages: not long enough!
...begins with a journey - Belgarath and Ce'Nedra go to see Belgarath to nag the story out of him - and, of course, to see Polgara's twin children, by Durnik.
Eventually, the stubborn Belgarath gives way to the implacable young queen and begins his life story, right from the start.
Born Garath, in a village with no name, to a people who didn't have a name, Garath was a theif, a rogue and a liar and was cast out from his village to wander alone. After ... ...who refused to follow Gorim to UL, and stays with them for a while before setting off again to eventually, dying in the snow, Aldur finds him. And begins to train him to be a sorcerer - by means of hard labour.
Exceedingly well written, this book is completely unputdownable (great word eh?) - teh characters are vivid and real, the story is gripping and the style just sucks you in so far you don't read the story as much as live it.
This is another ...
