Interesting bits to be found - but you have to search
Review of The Peoples of Middle Earth - J.R.R. Tolkien by
yhwman
Advantages: Some good bits
Disadvantages: Lots of bits that won't be of interest to the average reader
...easy going. A lot of the book you will not read, there are huge sections based on the development of the languages present in Middle-Earth but the sections devoted to how various parts of the story evolved are fascinating. There are also a two new, albeit unfinished, stories. In general the book is very hard going and if you attempt to read it all you will fail, however pick and choose the bit’s that interest you and you will find it rewarding. ...

the lord of the rings
Review of The Lord of the Rings (3 Book Box set) - J. R. R. Tolkien by
celt67
Advantages: new style of cover
Disadvantages: no pictures
this boxset is the three books in one which is good so you dont have to go out and buy them all!but generally they r good books much better than harry potter and they really capture your imagination. They have a much better looking cover than the old ones more adult if you like. It contains the fellowship of the ring, the two towers, the return of the king which all make the Lord of the Rings which have recently been made into films one for each ... ...ones or biograghys but this is possibly the best i have ever read. you havent read a book till you bought this pack of three.i think they r for every1 cos they are dark at sumpoints and happy at others .well worth a read even if its your kids book-excellent ...

The Experience of Tolkien
Review of The Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien by
matwise
Advantages: Best book of all time
Disadvantages: Will eat up your life
...'must' read, not only is the story one of the most exciting and compelling I have ever read, but the depth and richness of the text is surpassed by none.
In this review I will not explain the story line, as many of the other reviewers have done that and thanks to the films the story is quite well known, but I will try and explain the experience of reading the books which for me is as important, if not more so, than the actual story itself. I first ... ...were the first books I ever read), and in the 'twenty plus' years since have re-read them many times. This in itself shows the compelling nature of the text and you will discover new things with every new reading which will draw you even deeper into the world of Middle Earth and its myths and histories.
The Lord of the Rings is split into three volumes, and each volume contains two books, however, most people refer to The Lord of the Rings as being ...

The Hobbit! A Must!
Review of The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien by
KPN7
Advantages: Everything about this book. cannot be said
Disadvantages: None.
...and buy this version of the book and read it again. Anyone who says that this book is for younger readers only are completely mad. This book is thrilling, compelling and if you read it thorougholy, quite difficult to understand however not as difficult as the amazing trilogy Lord of the Rings.
This book is guaranteed to have you thoroughly compelled from start to finish. You will not be able to put the book down. JRR. Tolkein is an amzing storyteller ... ...This book will explain the Shire and Middle Earth extremeley well which will leave you thinking that Middle Earth could be down the road or somewehere near to you and that these amazing creatures are actual living beings. Many different colourful characters are introduced in this book however I will not go into these as to avoid spoling the whole story for you. All I have to say is that this is a classic novel which should not be overlooked by any ...

For Tolkien fans only
Review of The Silmarillion - J.R.R. Tolkien by
knight_oblivion
Advantages: Great high adventure atmosphere
Disadvantages: Too solemn and tragic
I audio-read Silmarillion the last week-end (my girlfriend kept talking about it, so I gave it a chance). I had read LOTR a while ago and had enjoyed it although "The Hobbit" remains my favorite. As for this collection of "tales", it's a bit stuffy and too ceremonial in tone for my taste, especially the first stories, those about the creation of the world and the Valar and all that. I guess I liked the stories where I recognized things that were ... ...Gondolin and some others. But the book is full of the stuffiness that Tolkien displays quite often in LOTR, especially in the third volume, with all those farewell ceremonies and glorious speeches ad poems. After audio-reading this, I really miss the funny, fairy-like tone of "The Hobbit" so I guess I'll be reading that again. So, for "experts" who want to know everything about the Middle-Earth universe, this is a must-buy, but if you're more action-oriented ...
