Review of Running with the Demon - Terry Brooks by
Calypte
Advantages: Decent writing style, easy to read
Disadvantages: Odd mix of storybook characters, just not as good as it could have been
...the present day.
In Running with the Demon, John Ross crosses paths with Nest Freemark while chasing a demon. It’s what he does, you know. The demon is a rather nasty creature, but it seemed to me that for the most part it was a rather petty, small-scale kind of an evilness. The demon can appear in human form, but more often makes itself ‘blend in’, become so familiar looking that people don’t really notice it. From this ... ...people, pushing them towards doing ‘naughty’ things.
Oh, all right. Things do get a little more evil than that. Causing little old ladies to have heart attacks in church, for instance. Or trying to set free a very scary creature of pure destruction, trapped for centuries in a massive oak tree. And… taunting Nest. For some reason, the demon - and John Ross, for that matter - seem very interested in little Nest Freemark. Will she ...

It had me hooked from the very first page right through to the very last and I have reread it many times since. Lion of Macedon - READ IT
Review of Lion of Macedon - David Gemmell by
ysith
Advantages: Greek history with a touch of fantasy - Brilliant!!
Disadvantages: Not a single one
to put it simply, exceptional!
I have read, re-read and read again many, many of D. Gemmell's books. All of them have been superb, but this is definateley in the top 5. The thing that really stands out for me is how well the Author has blended history with fanatsy and brought to like quite possibly the greatest era of greek history. The story is formed around the life of Parmeneon, the half-spartan half-macedonian general of King Philip of Macedon, ... ...time. Giving away too much of the story would certainly spoil the book for some, so all I will say is, if you are interested in greek history, buy this book. If you like Heroic Fantasy novels, buy this book, and if you are a Gemmell fan (and somehow has not read this book) buy it, read it, then re-read it. ...

Good Night!
Review of White Night - Jim Butcher by
Soho_Black
Advantages: Colourful and exciting writing
Disadvantages: Falls for too many of the TV cliches
I recall seeing the trailers for the television version of "The Dresden Files" and thinking it sounded like a wonderful concept; that of a wizard Private Investigator in modern day Chicago. As someone who rarely watches television, though, I never managed to see an episode. So I was delighted to find it was also available in book form.
The book starts in a hurry, with the finding of a dead body which looks like a suicide. However, all is not what ... ...that only Harry Dresden, the aforementioned wizard, can see. It turns out that there is a serial killer at large in the magical community of Chicago and they're trying to taunt Dresden into getting involved. It is to get worse before it gets better for Dresden, as it seems that his brother may be the killer and so he has to find someone else behind it, or risk finding his brother implicated.
Starting with the ninth book in a series wouldn't usually ...
