I don’t know about you, but when I was a kid I always remember Rusk’s. Whether it was as a snack or in some milk as a cereal, it’s one of them taste and textures I can’t forget. In fact, when I was pregnant with Aaliyah I actually had a craving for them quite badly. Had to be the pink Original box, I bought them at the time for Charisma and she wasn’t keen, still they fed my craving and were also a great source for vitamins too, what better way to feed my unborn baby, then by feeding myself with a baby food? Strange logic I know but at the time it made sense to me in my pregnant state. I am still a huge fan of Rusk’s today and occasionally have a nibble, which is why I thought I would do this op on Farley’s Original Rusk’s.
The Packaging The packaging for the original packet is as follows. On the front of the box there’s a pink oval shape with 2 teddy bears sitting down eating a bowl of rusks amongst some wheat sheaths. On one side you have nutritional information, the other how to make up the product and
use it and the rear of the box has a little history on Farley’s along with some other products they do in the Rusk’s range. Most of the box is royal blue and the white Farley’s logo is on all sides of the box apart from the bottom.
How to use the Rusk’s. As the box suggests, generally I use these as a finger food or snack for my girls. My daughter Aaliyah (7 and a half months) seems to eat on them at leisure and will take about 40 minute to eat one. In turn it keeps her happy, although very messy! I have got to say this is their only down fall, when children at eating them as finger foods they make a hell of a mess – especially if your little angels teething and dribbling everywhere. Risk is a nightmare to get off of the face aswell, needs a bit of a scrub and if you leave it looks like a bad case of a crusty nose cold :/ My eldest daughter Charisma (2 and a half) loves Rusk’s as biscuits, although finds them very filling and will only ever eat them as a biscuit snack. Me personally, I love them with hot milk as a breakfast cereal. The box suggests making them up with some of baby’s normal milk and mixing it together as a cereal, or they say you can use water. Alternatively they say use them as a finger food. Either way, they smell lovely and remind me of being a kid when ever I am near them!
The Taste. I am basing this opinion on the original flavour. I have only ever used the reduced sugar ones other than this and can not comment on the other flavours. The reduced sugar ones I find are slightly harder and crunchier, my daughters really wasn’t keen at all. The original flavour ones are not too sweet and are slightly malty in flavour. A rather hard texture, but thicker than a biscuit. In hot milk they remind me of ready brek but with a distinctive Rusk flavour. It’s really hard to describe how they taste; they smell lovely and homely if that makes sense. Not a strong nasty taste and very palatable whether with hot milk, water or as a finger food.
What Farley’s Say (This information was taken from the rear of the box) “Farley’s have been making foods especially for babies for more than 100 years. All our recipes are developed with Farley’s and Heinz nutritionists and use only the highest quality ingredients to help provide your baby with a varied nutritional balanced diet. Farley’s Rusks are enriched with vitamins and minerals and are available in a range of tempting varieties, including Reduced Sugar and Gluten Free alternatives. Their versatility means that they can be used as a weaning food for babies from 4 months as well as a finger food for babies and children who can feed themselves” The box also clearly states at the bottom of this information “THESE PRODUCTS ARE NOT BREAST MILK SUBSTITUTES”
Nutritional Information (as taken from the box). One Rusk (17g) contains the following: Energy 69kcals, Protein 1.2g, Carbohydrate 13.2g, of which sugars 4.9g, Fat, 1.2g, of which saturates 0.5g, Fibre 0.4g, Sodium TRACE. Vitamin D 17% LRV, Thiamin 18% LRV, Riboflavin 18% LRV, Niacin 17% LRV, Calcium 15% LRV and Iron 20% LRV. ** The LRV (Labelling Reference Value) is the amount of vitamin or mineral needed per day to meet the requirements of infants and young children **
Different Flavours, Varieties and Sizes? Rusk’s come in a few different flavours and varieties. They are as follows: Rusk’s Original (Pink Box Oval shape on Front), Reduced Sugar (Pale blue Box Oval shape on Front), Apple Flavour Reduced Sugar (Pale green Box Oval shape on Front), Banana Flavour Reduced Sugar (Pale Yellow/Orange Box Oval shape on Front) and lastly Gluten Free Reduced sugar. There seems to be 2 different size boxes you can buy the Rusk’s in (This as far as I am aware goes for all varieties and flavours); 9 or 18 Rusks. I am doing my opinion from the 18 Rusk packets which are 300g in size. I am guessing that the smaller packet would be 150g.
Contact information on the company. The only contact information I could find on the box was as follows; “Come and visit our website www.tinytums.co.uk for weaning information, or write to Sue Baxter at : H J Heinz Co. LTD, Hayes, Middlesex, UB4 8AL, or call us on 0845 057 0057. For the Republic of Ireland address please see inside top flap of box” I’ll be honest and say as Aaliyah had gotten hold of the box and eaten half the top of it I have no idea what the contact information is for R.O.I but if you do want me to put it up here, give me a few days (When I shall be getting a new box) and I shall add it.
Where can I buy and how much? Ok this pricing information was gathered from Tesco’s (http://www.tesco.com); Farley’s Rusks 4 Month Original 18 £1.75 (£0.10/each)
Farley’s Rusks 4 Month Reduced Sugar Apple 9 £1.13 (£0.13/each)
Farley’s Rusks 4 Month Reduced Sugar Original 9 £1.13 (£0.13/each)
If you do look around you sometimes find special offer on and it’s always worth saving a few pennies if you can as if you children are anything like mine, they seem to go through these like wild fire!
My Final Conclusion. I have to say I really think Rusk’s are great. They are nutritious and healthy, they give my girls vitamins and minerals and are a great snack for them. I don’t tend to give them to Aaliyah (My 7 and a half month old) as cereal; she usually has them as a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack. Personally if I am eating them I like them with hot milk, which is rare for me as I hate hot milk! They can be a bit expensive if you go through them as quick as us, but I’d rather give these to my girls than chocolate or crisps any day. They are healthier than biscuits too aswell. Over all I think they are a fantastic product and as they have been going years I thoroughly trust them and recommend them! Mel xxx
