Farmville is a farmyard simulation game produced by Zynga which runs as a facebook application. Although they have their own website at www.farmville.com, I can't work out how to login without being a facebook member - so I guess you have to be one to play.

Having been invited by numerous friends and gifted everything from a pomigranite tree through to a horse, I finally decided to check it out and see what it was about. You start off with a plot of land, which you can plough and grow plants in and if like me you've got rather generous friends, you'll find you've probably been given quite a lot to start you off.

Farmville is easy to play, it's not complicated but is strangely addictive, the more you grow, harvest and look after your animals and trees, the higher level you reach. Farmville is now apparently the most played non-violent computer game in the world and it's pretty good for the younger generations because it requires assistance from your friends to really shoot up the levels. The more you help others, the more they are likely to help you.

It's a bit unrealistic.. I mean they have some seasonal specials and this winter has seen a plethora of temporary animals, trees and monuments pop up. Perhaps the oddest is a penguin that makes ice cubes which you can then sell. Anyway, it's light-hearted, fast-loading and very brightly coloured and it's definitely worth checking out! A criticism would be that the farmyard sounds can become a bit annoying after a while and it didn't take long for me to change my settings to mute.
