Advantages Advantages Will put you off fast food for life

Disadvantages Disadvantages Possibly biased in that it does not mention anything positive about the fast food industry

Britain is getting fatter according to numerous recent publications and shock TV documentaries. Apparently we eat more fast food than any other country in Europe. But we are still nowhere near as fat as America. I believe one half of Americans are now overweight or obese. This situation has resulted from a massive shift in lifestyle involving eating more and worse foods and exercising less. And the prime culprit is fast food. My own personal experience of driving through America is being able to find nothing but fast food joints for lunch. Driving into a small town or a drive in shopping ... more

Advantages Advantages Well written, factual, shockingly informative, well argued and backs up points.

Disadvantages Disadvantages None, unless you're Ronald McDonald, in which case don't read this as it'll upset you.

Published in 2001, 'Fast Food Nation', subtitled 'The Dark Side of the All-American Meal' is a book by investigative journalist Eric Schlosser, which centres around the history, methodologies, ideas and production of fast food, and the chains that churn it out. I consider myself to be quite a conscientious eater. As a vegetarian, I am already fully aware of the conditions that traditional food animals suffer under, hence the reason I'm vegetarian in the first place. Fast food chains don't generally have much to offer me in terms of food anyway, so it's very rare that I visit them, but after ... more

Advantages Advantages It is a thought provoking read..

Disadvantages Disadvantages It can get quite heavy in places

The book “Fast Food Nation” in the bookshops, first came out in the UK and USA in 2001. We got a copy from Amazon and it is currently on sale for £6.39, compared to a cover price of £7.99. I had expected the book to be a straightforward attack on the quality of the food and dodgy practices that are the subject of rumours at McDonald’s and other fast food restaurants, however it goes a lot deeper than that. If you want to give up junk food and make a step towards a healthier eating plan, start by reading this book, as it will no doubt put you off for life fast food places for ever. Although a ... more

Advantages Advantages Will put you off unhealthy fast food for the rest of your life.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Maybe a bit one sided.

It's lunchtime, you're hungry, and you need something quick. You walk through the doors of one of the popular fast food 'restaurants'. It's busy, there are lots of people around from all walks of life. Businessmen in suits, mothers with pushchairs and screaming children, men with big muscles and tattoos, adolescents with green hair and rings through every conceivable part of their body. You approach the counter and join one of the fast moving queues. No need to look at the menu - you already know what you want. Finally it's your turn and you are face-to-face with a kid who really looks like ... more

Advantages Advantages A fascinating expose on an eating phenomenon

Disadvantages Disadvantages You'll have to change your lifestyle if you have any morals at all!

When some people found out that I was intending to read this book they were horrified - 'You'll never be able to, like, eat anything, like, every again!' But personally, I'd prefer to go a minute out of my way to avoid MacDonalds than mindlessly shove that food into my mouth now that I've read this book. If you're the sort of person who doesn't care about anything but the price of a product, and couldn't care less about exploited workers cos they're on the other side of the world, then this book is not for you. But if you hate being just another blind consumer (and after all, isn't the point ... more
