Feet of Clay is the nineteenth Discworld novel. Set on a flat world populated by Wizards, Dwarves, Trolls and Golems it is a place were anything can happen and often does. However, what makes this and every other Discworld novel different is that this world strangely mirrors our own. Royalty and the aristocracy are pompous; politicians self-serving and policeman necessary but loathed. Indeed the Worlds major city Ankh Morpork seems not dissimilar from London or New York.
This novel is the third in what many consider “The Watch Series” of books as it centres on Ankh Morpork’s police force known as “The City Watch”. The Patrician is being poisoned, nobody knows how or why but Sir Samuel Vimes Commander of the Watch is determined to find out. Meanwhile, there are a number of strange murders occurring around the city. Who would want to kill a Priest and the owner of the Dwarf Bread museum? Why are Golems committing suicide? And is Corporal Nobby Nobbs, the only human who carries a letter from the Patrician bearing “Certified human being” really next in line to the throne?
Feet Of Clay is a bizarre novel in that it is has an almost film noir feel to it. Sam Vimes plays the hard-nosed detective with considerable cynicism and lack of political correctness. There is a darkness and atmosphere to this tale seldom seen in a humorous fantasy novel and it adds depths to the conspiracy theory style plot.
This novel as with the majority of Pratchett tales borrows heavily and parodies brilliantly several other works from fiction, stage and screen. The Golems are portrayed as lifeless machines with several references to “I Robot”; the book not the film; “Terminator” and “Robocop”. This novel succeeds in poking fun at the seriousness of the sci-fi genre with several sideswipes at Star Trek as Pratchett has always portrayed the Dwarves in his novels as angry, little Klingons.
"Today Is A Good Day For Someone Else To Die!"
A classic quote from Vimes in this novel regarding dwarves is:
"Just because someone's a member of an ethnic minority doesn't mean they're not a nasty small-minded little jerk [...]"
However, Pratchett does have some serious points to make in this tale. He takes several pot shots at the Monarchy and the Political system and asks serious questions regarding when is something considered alive. A regular theme for Pratchett also seems to be to mock organised religion in general and in this novel it seems to be the turn of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the form of Constable Visit The Infidel With Explanatory Pamphlets. Pratchett’s genius is in being so direct yet inoffensive. He is all encompassing in his scorn so no one group can feel left out.
The characterisation in this novel is particularly pleasing. Pratchett is renowned for making presumptions that the reader will characterise his cast themselves. In this novel he actually describes his motley crew of heroes, anti-heroes and villains. Vimes’s history is delved into and the relationship between Captain Carrot and Sergeant Angua is developed. It is nice to see Pratchett writing something that isn’t purely plot-driven but actually has some substance to it. All to often readers are left to fill in the gaps and for a change, in Feet Of Clay this is not the case.
As ever Pratchett is hilarious in both his observations and one liners. His cast of characters are my personal favourites and it is nice to see Death in any novel (the anthropomorphic personification not the event). The pace to this novel can be slow at times due to the change in style for Pratchett in his characterisation but the plot is gripping and reads like a parody of an old-fashioned murder/mystery novel with Captain Carrot the Watson to Vime’s Sherlock Holmes.
At 414 pages this is a longer read than many of Pratchett earlier works but benefits for it. Perhaps a bit heavy for those used to the out and out belly laughs of a “Wyrd Sisters”. Nonetheless a worthwhile read and with the increased characterisation it has the added bonus of not needed any prior Discworld knowledge.

...be pleased to note that Feet Of Clay marks a VERY on form Mr Pratchett. Its almost a straight out murder mystery beginning with the discovery and subsequent investigation into the death of a seemingly harmless priest within the walls of the Disc's largest city of Ankh-Morpock. Immediately on the case is the city's Watch which has now expanded from that seen in previous novels to include dwarves, trolls and even a werewolf from the Uberwald! When ... ...no mean feat... Feet of Clay weaves a number mysteries into its plot and lays a liberal trail of bizarre clues for you to follow in the truest art of the murder mystery novel. Its not going to fool that many people for too long, but as a foray into such novels it is extremely interesting - and you can't say that there are that many books which cross Sherlock Holmes with The Lord Of The Rings and then throw in a whole sackful of satire. For those ...

Advantages: hilarious, great characters, very clever Disadvantages: a bit of a slow starter
...Well, compared to Moving Pictures, Feet Of Clay was a bit of a slow starter. I enjoyed it all the way through, but it wasn’t yelling at me to read it for the first hundred pages or so. Then at one point, I looked up and had somehow read 150 pages in one go. The next time I glanced at the clock, it was almost midnight and I had about eighty pages to read. I prized the book out of my rapacious fingers and forced myself to wait until the kids ... ...The characters are wonderful, as ever, so that it all jumps out of the page and runs as a film in your head. It is laugh-out-loud funny and very, very clever. I would recommend it, but only gave it 8 out of 10. Moving Pictures got 9 out of 10. Both well worth a read though.
Here’s to my next Pratchett…. Just got to decide which one… ...

Having said that Feet of Clay is a really good read and certainly one of the better books in the sequence involving the watch.
It is set on the discworld, a flat disc that travels through space on the backs of four elephants standing on top of a turtle. The discworld has politics, religion, magic and all the standard fantasy fair. It also has equal rights movements for trolls, dwarfs and the undead. In a way the discworld is a warped mirror ... ...or obscure historical events.
Feet of Clay sees the return of the Anhk-Morpork City Watch. The watch have appeared in previous novels (Guards!Guards! and Men At Arms) and this one sees them making furthur progress in extending and modernising the organisation.
Anhk-Morpork is much like any british victorian city and has a high level of crime. The watch investigate a series of strange murders involving Golems(clay robots) and then become involved ...

Advantages: Multiple levels and lighthearted humour Disadvantages: Works best with knowledge of previous books
This is another of Terry's Watch books, in it we see how the new watch is growing and moderninsing. All the old favourite from Sam Vine, Captain Carrot through to nobby and Angua return and are fleshed out that little bit more with Terry's unique descriptive skills.
The story centres on a series of murders which the watch are investigateing and as such the plot is relatively compelling. You can read it as a light hearted book and not worry aboutthe ... ...and try to work out who did it, why and where.
This book also introduces Golems to the reader, an intresting new addition that Terry does not make use of in later books.
It also develops the discworlds own brand of philosophy and relegion.
This is one of the books i would place higher on a list of Terry's work andis definately worth a read. However i woudl sugest you read either Guards! Guards! or Men at Arms or both before hand (in that order) ...

Feet of clay is the third in the city watch trilogy and 19 in the discworld series. Most people who read this book will have read most of if not all of those books prior to this. Maybe you are not one of those people and have simply heard Terry Pratchett's name bantered around. You are wondering if he's any good and have found yourselves considering this book. I've read all the previous books and even performed the second in the guards series as ... ...an excellent author. He's extremely witty and clever and at some points during this book you will find yourself laughing out loud. This is actually one of my favourite Discworld novels. In its simplest form really it is a detective novel, albeit set in a world on a disc, resting on four elephants on the back of a giant turtle! Its a fantasy comedy secondly, it has dwarves, werewolves and golems (which this book is about) in it. If you like the sound ...

7. FEET OF CLAY
Author - TerryPratchett.
A series of mysterious deaths comes to the attention of Commander Vimes who with the help of the 'watch' is trolls and Dwarfs sets out to solve these peculiar deaths. Enter a strange Golum who has begun to think independently, throw into this the exotic backdrop of Ankh-Morpok and the threat of civil unrest and this is my favourite pratchett story of all. Coming a close second is 'Going Postal'
An excellent page turner.

Advantages: Clever witty story, Spot on characters Disadvantages: Some may find the lead character a bit ordinary
since his first Diskworld novel. However just of late I have found some of his newer creations to be a bit lacking (Soul Music and interesting Times just did not flick my B-Spot (that?s my Book Spot to be precise). My mum (who I introduced to Terry) was given one of Pratchett?s latest books 'The Truth' for Christmas but did not like it and stopped reading half way through.
Normally I would have taken this recommendation (critism) and never even picked up the book. Fortunately, as usual there it was in the library and I took it out. Like so many books I have enjoyed, 'The Truth' nearly went unread, but I could not find my copy of 'Feet of Clay' so I started to read this one instead'.
It is inspired... Pratchett at his best. Terry has one amazing ability. He can take things that are in our life and our time and transform them into pure ...
