The Mirena, maybe not to everyone's taste.

Advantages: Low maintenace and very reliable contraceptive method
Disadvantages: Strong side effects in my case

I first had the Mirena inserted after the birth of my second child at the age of 28. I had struggled with severe mood swings whilst taking the the contraceptive pill (mini pill) and had after years of changing between different types of pills lost the faith in it. Half of China can't be wrong...

Advantages: Too many to list in this box.
Disadvantages: A rough ride for a couple of months.

Implanon works, but for all the wrong reasons!

Advantages: Prevents pregnancy, you don't have to remember to take pills
Disadvantages: Almost constant bleeding, No sex drive, Headaches, Mood swings, depression, Significant bruising

My experience of getting Implanon inserted

Advantages: No pill, no risk of osteoperosis, may stop periods altogether
Disadvantages: Periods change, headaches, acne, weight gain: look on official Implanon website for full list

...get local anesthetic for the small area it is put in. I don't like injections (who does) so was nervous. My first advice is - don't look! I didnt see the anesthetic needle for this injection so I can't really comment on what it looks like, but in past experience, it always feels worse if you look. Review of Implanon Contraceptive Implant

Not so marvellous..!

Advantages: Regular periods, and of course, still no kids
Disadvantages: nausea, mood swings, migraines

...those until I started taking Marvelon - a day, sometimes two taken out of my life. On the other hand though, they have kept my periods VERY regular, almost to an hour each month, and are a easy way of moving your period for example for holidays - something I miss a lot, being on the POP.
