This was my first guitar.
When I decided to learn to play the guitar, I asked my guitar teacher to tell me what equipment I should get, and he wrote down on a sheet of paper what I needed and told me to go to a specific music store in Denmark Street, off Tottenham Court Road, and give it to his friend there who would take care of it and give me a discount on everything.
I knew nothing about guitars, so I trusted his expertise.
I went to the store, and this was the guitar: the Squier by Fender Standard Strat.
Fender is one of the world's instrument manufacturing giants, and Squier is its lower priced brand.
The Squier instruments are mostly derived from Fender's own line.

Bought a maple-neck (with black plastic dot markers) sunburst Am Std Strat from Bentley Music in Kuala Lumpur in 1992 for RM 1 670. came with a rectangular hardshell case (not form-fit) with screw-type SKB hinges and lock (padlock not provided).
Had to go through 7 guitars until I found 1 that had a flaw I could correct (faulty volume pot). This goes to say that all the guitars I tested had unpardonable flaws such as poor string-polepiece alignment (you lose power and definition), ill-fitting neck-pocket, badly-seated nut (you lose tone and sustain) or scratchy/poorly tapered volume and/or tone
controls (makes the guitar unsuitable for live gigs until these are replaced).
This should not be the case with a fine company such as Fender. Quality control must be tightened, in my humble opinion. As mentioned before, out ...

The american deluxe series of strats offer great ballance of modern conveniences such as noiseless pickups, a modern C shaped neck and construction techniques that all in all offer an extremely well playing and great sounding instrument.
I had personally bought an american deluxe simply as a "blues guitar" however it didn't take me long to fall in love with the instrument. Whilst the samarium cobalt noiseless pickups from Bill Lawrence do not offer the same glassy bite that the traditional (and noisy) pickups do they offer a thick yet very distinctive tone that is rich and dynamic with all but the highest of trebble intact.
