This perennial herb can reach up to six feet in height . It has a pleasant aniseed kind of flavour which adds a certain freshness to many fish and cheese dishes as well as salads . The seeds themselves can be added to bread and biscuits and are reputed to have medicinal benefits too . Fennel is not a fussy plant by any means . It's only demands are an open sunny site which is also well drained . It tends to self seed every year and the resultant seedlings can be transplanted for subsequent years .
