Fabulous fennel I have a wonderful fennel in my garden. Let me tell you about it. I got my Fennel from a garden centre about 10 years ago. It would have been easy to grow from seed but it was one of those impulse buy’s. Fennel originates from south west Asia and grows well in the med and Europe
I have a very chalky soil and fennel thrives well on it. Fennel is a focal point in my herb garden .It grows about 5–6 foot tall it has pretty feathery fern like leaves the smell of the leaves crushed is like aniseed. Sow fennel seeds in the springtime just sow seed in normal garden soil and it will grow. Do not grow close to dill or it will cross-pollinate.
The flowers are umbels of small yellow flowers. It flowers in the summer Producing many seeds. These self set all over my garden. I am often pulling them up or potting them for friends or for the school summer fete. Fennel seeds are small oval light brown seeds with a flavour of anise. The ancient Chinese used fennel to cure snakebites and scorpion stings. In times of old a fennel was strung over doorways to keep evil spirits away. Apparently ancient herbalists said fennel helps fat people grow lean, (hey let me get at my fennel quick) fennel does suppress the appetite
I do not cook with it much. Fennel goes well with fish apparently, but I am not too keen on a lot of fish I occasionally add a few leave to a salad. Fennel seeds are good to make saffron rice tasty. Fennel is not recommended for pregnant women. I just love to see it growing and smell it as I brush past it and crush it in my fingers.
Fennel is used as a remedy for colic and wind. I read do not use large quantities of fennel if you have some types of breast cancer. I am just of now to check my garden seeing if the fennel is still there. I posted this opp on ciao previously on dooyoo as Malu asked me about Fennel thanks Malu

Sounds really nice, don't think I have tried it before though really. Great review. Matt

When we moved into our current house there was a huge clump of this in the garden. I eventually decided that it had to go as it was huge and we oply have a small garden! I loved its fragrance though, Jan
