The Story. The story is based in a farmyard and features an adorable little dog called Fergus who is mainly black and white with a brown patch on his right eye. The story centres around the different animals helping the farmer Bob as his tractor has broken down. The chicken pick fruit, the pigs move bales of hay etc; but they soon realise that they need to earn some money to have the tractor repaired as all the work is making them exhausted. They come up with a plan - all Fergus has to do is keep it secret. The plan involves the animals leaving the farm for a Summer Fair and Fergus has to pretend to be the different animals so Farmer Bob doesn’t realise that they are gone. Poor Fergus does his best running around the farm making all the farmyard noises but makes the mistake of saying Quack! When he should have said Chuck! Of course Farmer Bob realises the mistake and goes to investigate and finds out what they animals have been up to.
My opinion. This is a beautifully illustrated book that children from any age would appreciated. My grandchildren, the youngest is 19 months loves to have this story read to him and enjoys making all the animal noises. The first page features all the animals - pigs, chickens, ducks and a cow all making the different noises. He enjoys looking at the illustrations on each page and pointing to different objects there by increasing his vocabulary. The pictures of the animals show clearly the different characteristics and the expressions they make are truly delightful ,even down to the little mice. This is an excellent book that can be read to very small children but for children who want to develop their reading, this is an ideal book as each page has an illustration to go with the short text to help them understand the story. I enjoy reading this story and will definitely be looking out for other titles in the series, which include:
Fergus the Farmyard Dog Fergus’s Big Splash Fergus’s Upside- down Day Fergus and Marigold Fergus goes Quackers! Fergus’s Scary Night Fergus to the Rescue Fergus the Sea Dog
