Fernando from Spain was last season's Minardi test driver so he is familiar with the PS01 and with some of the Grand Prix circuits. He did finish fourth previously in the FIA International Formula 3000 Championship with Team Astromega and a number of pundits have been impressed with the driving ability and race craft shown by the young Spaniard. Indeed for a driver who showed he was capable of winning on a circuit like the demanding Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium in only his second single-seater race, his admirers have a case when they suggest he is something special.
One hopes too many expectations are not placed on him since it would be too much to expect him to set the Formula I championship alight in a basically uncompetitive car. The step up from Formula 3000 to Formula I is a big one and there ar a lot of other talented young drivers such as Jenson Button,Nick Heidfeld, and Kimi Raikkonen in the pack at the moment. He has time to fine-tune his race craft and gain solid Formula I experience and perhaps after a season or two,we can better judge whether Fernando will be acclaimed as the "Flying Spaniard".
Advantages: Great driver Disadvantages: Inexperienced and young
Young Fernando in in his first season in the premier league of Motorsport.
Its a bit Like Rushden and Diamonds coming up into the football league.
Much is promised of this youngster but can he perform.
One thing is for sure, he wont be winning for Minardi.
Minardi are a small tail end team with no money. Their car is good but it is underpowered and slow.
What it does have is star drivers of the future cutting their teeth in Formula One. If you ... ...grid and up to 20th place or above, you must be good.
This is how I see Fernando. To be honest, he has been slightly overshadowed this year by another bright prospect at Sauber, Kimi Raikonnen.
Where Raikonnen has posted points and quick lap times, Alonso has outqualified and outpaced his older and more experienced team mate, Tarso Marques consistently and by big margins.
This is tremendous when you think they have exactly the same equipment.

Reviews which might be of interest for "Fernando Alonso"
In years to come we may recognise Lewis Hamilton vs FernandoAlonso as one of F1's greatest rivalries.
Hamilton had earlier ignored McLaren team instructions by not allowing duble world champion FernandoAlonso to get by at the start of the final 15-minute qualifying session on Saturday
Hamilton had a small part to play in events as he had triggered it by ignoring team orders earlier in the session.
Again it will be interesting knowing that Alonso is new in the team and Hamilton knows how things work in Mclaren working there for 9 yrs. Alonso is a double world champion though and he will show the way to Hamilton.
I wish Alonso would have chosen to be in Ferrari, that way he wouldn´t have the enemy spies at his own home. ...
I think that FernandoAlonso is more to blame because he is a two time world champion this was Lewis Hamiltons rookie year and he came second overall that is fantastic. But if it werent for alonso cutting infront of hamilton and forcing him off the track several times I think that Lewis Hamilton could have won the championship. I also think that McLaren-Mercedes were treated unfairly and I think that they shouldnt have gotten kicked out of the constructers championship. Ferrari were also caught breaking the rules and only Mclaren were punished I just think that was unfair. When the inspectors checked the Mclaren cars they didnt find any similarities between ferrari and Mclaren so I dont see why Mclaren got kicked out of the constructers championship. ...
Advantages: It's an exciting end to a great season Disadvantages: Michael Schumacher wasn't in it this year...!
In the days of yawn, couch-potato spectators of Formula One grumbled that the sport was boring, that only Michael Schumacher and Ferrari won the race, with the occasional win gifted to Eddie Irvine, Rubens Barrichello and Felipe Massa (Schumacher's team-mates at Ferrari since 1996) to reward them for their loyalty over the seasons as they worked to help him become statistically the greatest driver of all time.
Then it started to change. FernandoAlonso and Renault upped their game and in 2005 and 2006 the Spaniard took the challenge to the German - and won. Alonso became the darling of the motorsport world and a hero in his homeland. As Schumacher tried in vain to win the titles in both years and, most specifically, to win the title in '06 and retire from the sport as undefeated champion, Alonso kept him honest and took both titles ...
