After around about 60 to 70 thousand miles the clutch on mine went which cost £180 to replace, and shortly after that the cylinder head gasket went which cost £260 to replace, thankfully it did not need skimming as this would have added a significant amount. I have now had my punto for 8 years and have done a good few thousand miles in it. It cost me 6 and a half grand at the tme and when you added the finance onto it then it was nearer ten grand, I hate car finance. The interiour is basic but you cannot expect much more for the money and the age of the car. Whilst we are taking about money it is also worth noting that the depreciation on this car is horrendious, and I am better off running the thing into the ground now, rather than traiding it in.
The head room for someone of my size is excellent and that is a major bonus for us tall people I still have a good 2 inches head room. Though the steering wheel does at times obstruct the view of the speedometer and a rev counter on the instrument panel would be handier than a clock.
Around town it is a fairly nippy beast and the it picks up fairly well from a standing start considering the low power of the car, the innital acceleration through the first two gears can normally burn of a Lexus if you catch them unawares.
Out of town apart from the fact that it does not really like going up very steep hills (remember it is a small car), I have no problems with it. You can really throw it around the place and this is exceptional fun, as it is faster than you'd expect a car of this size especially coming out of bends. The short wheel base also means that you can go into bends fairly quickly.
On the Motorway you have to remember that it is a small car and drive it as such though it will hit a ton with a bit of complaining, I have done a ton ten in it going up the M74. For some strange reason there is a nice albeit unexpected power band at around 85 so there is still some oomph left in the motor even then, but not that much.
On the servicing side there area few niggles mainly cost of replacement parts. One really bad design flaw is that after about 4 to 5 years the whole sump needs replacing due to corrosion this cost me around 80 quid, more if you go to a fiat dealer. After around about 60 to 70 thousand miles the clutch on mine went which cost £180 to replace, and shortly after that the cylinder head gasket went which cost £260 to replace, thankfully it did not need skimming as this would have added a significant amount. On the whole a fairly good basic car, The fuel econimy is good as well I average about 40 to 45 mpg.

Advantages: Cheap petrol bills, cheap cars Disadvantages: costly parts / servicing. Poor quality
Recently owning a 1997 Fiat Punto 1.1sx 3door hatch, I thought the need to share my experiences.
I bought the car, due to its boastful fuel consumption, and its cheap looking maintainance bills.
Firstly I cannot fault the car on it's fuel economy as for the three months I had the car it did quite well in that area, however these cheap fuel bills where indeed off-set by the highly inflated servicing costs at a Fiat dealer. I found parts which more ... ...found difficult to understand as the parts were poor.
The whole feel of the car, rang cheapness in my ears, especially when shutting the doors. When i did thus the whole rear wing area shook and the it sounded like a van door shutting, unlike a modern 1997 car.
after having a light nudge, to the front panel, I found that the build quality was also poor, as only after a light nudge I had the unfortunate experience of replacing certain panels, components, ...

Advantages: Value for money and reliability Disadvantages: Does nothing for my street cred
When I bought my Fiat 5 years ago, I based my choice on value for money. By shopping around the dealers I managed to get a considerable reduction over the list price (far better than most other makes)and although I chose the basic 5 door model with no extras, I got a well equipped vehicle. The car is 5 years old now and has been serviced annually by a Fiat garage. I have had no problems at all and the car is still in pristine condition inside and ... ...the car and fuel economy has been great and lived up to the claims in the brochure. I have also found the service costs to be reasonable (but not as good as the Nissan I had before).
It may not be the car to turn heads, but it has certainly been a sound choice for a reliable, comfortable and economical car. ...

Super Mini Sensations
The Fiat Punto was introduced into Great Britain in 1994 and is still currently being produced, now however in a different guise than before.
The Punto is a fashionable motor car, styled by Giugiaro it has good looks on the outside with practicality on the inside. Driving the car is a new experience for many with grippy handling but let down by a choppy and generally unsettled ride.
The car benefits from a modern design which ... ...the interests of those who would only buy the ruin of the mill superminis such as the Corsa or the Micra. Although like so many other Italian manufacturers the cars are plagued by niggling faults which prevent it from being a class leader.
The best models to go for are the 55s, the GT and ELX Cabrio. A solid ‘95N 55s five door could be had for as little as £3000. When buying you should look out for the following:
1) If you lose the ignition key ...

Advantages: City Button, Lots of boot space, good handling, comfortable, cheap Disadvantages: small car
I bought my fiat punto second hand, the previous owner bought it from new and has used it whilst in England, and was selling it as he was returning to his own country.
I got my car for a very good price, and I still have this car now. It's sitting on the drive waiting for my to drive to work tonight in it =] - Why I like the Fiat Punto -
- The shape is nice
- It runs very well
- It has a CITY BUTTON! =] Which makes the power steering very light ... ...a student so I'm very poor unfortunately, this car has been very good for me so far).
Any questions or comments - Don't hesitate to ask or comment =]

Advantages: Fun! Cheap! Disadvantages: Expensive to repair / unreliable
Punto's! I have had and used three fiatpunto's in the past. I am currently using a 2001 FiatPunto1.2 16v Sporting.
I'll start with the 1997 FiatPunto1.1i 55 SX 45000 miles. The car was mediocre from the inside, electric windows for the SX version with a manual sunroof. No power steering, but it's cut my trips to the gym!
The problems I've had with this car have been the clutch. The clutch needed replacing costing quite a bit. There was a few cases of misfiring which needed to be sorted by buying new leads and spark plugs.
The second punto was a 1996 FiatPunto1.1i 55 S 50000 miles. No electric windows, nothing fancy here. Drive quality was not very nice, quite a bumpy ride. The problems with this were the clutch again but the main problem was when the integrated Fiat immobiliser failed. Fiat garages are not very helpful ...
Advantages: superb fuel economy, low maintainance cost, value of money, many features, cheap tax and insurance Disadvantages: less room space for passenger, slightly poor in comfort and handling
just bought a Citroen Saxo 1.1SX (1996, P reg), 2 weeks ago. The most satisfied of this car is the fuel consumptions level, no matter you are in city or non-city driving, it still the leading compared with rivals like Renautl Clio 1.2, Vauxhall Corsa 1.2, and Fiatpunto1.2, Ford Fiesta 1.3, etc. I managed to get a ride about 120 miles just for 10 pounds petrol price ( It was 95.9 per liter at that time).
For the comfortable, it slightly poor due to there is lacking of room space for the rear passenger. whereas, for the performance, i don't feel it is very responsive for the pick-up but once it reached to 60 miles per hour, the performance started to taking place here.
There are quite alot of features of it like electrical windows, sunroof, immboliser, alarm system, central locking etc. With the low price, its rarely to get this ...
Advantages: friendly, cheap (for a car dealers), do as they say Disadvantages: depends on the car, sometimes they are visited quite often
Well, I had better begin by claiming an interest here, hadn't I? I was first introduced to St Leonards Motors of Hastings by my brother, who at the time was working in their sales department. In total, my family has bought several cars from them, including:
1Fiat Bravo
1FiatPunto1Fiat Uno
2 Fiat Tipos
1Fiat Croma
So you can see that we have bought over the entire range, both new and used. I can seriously say that, with my hand on my heart, they are a very friendly, not in the least bit pushy or overbearing, and accommodating dealership.
As you drive up Harley Shute Road from the A259 and turn left at the roundabout at the top, you zip down a little hill (hills, oh how I miss hills now that I live in Lincolnshire- you see fell walkers queuing to go over a speed hump round here!) and turn right into Churchwood Drive. You ...
