Having recently handed over our RAV4 to the body shop for some extensive repairs I have had the dubious pleasure of using a Fiat Punto as a courtesy car. While not a like for like replacement for our car, as there was no one else to blame for my situation I had little option but to accept the car offered or hire another at my own expense.
The model I have received is the three door 1.2 Active Sport. On an 05 plate with just over 20,000 on the clock my initial reservations have been reversed by what has turned out to be a very pleasant car indeed.
Performance~ With just the driver on board this is a pretty lively little car. By no means a hot hatch it is willing around town and an enjoyable drive. 0 - 60 times are unlikely to impress anyone but it is quick off the mark and will reach town speeds without any sense of sluggishness, it corners accurately and the gear change is neat and swift. At motorway speeds the engine noise becomes more noticeable, and may prove tiresome on long journeys, but it never becomes overly intrusive and it doesn't feel like it is being over worked at seventy miles an hour. With the wife and two kids on board you can feel the car working harder. Accelerating from stationary is more of a strain and there is more noticeable roll through the corners. With a full house on board this is a less pleasant drive and everything feels like hard work. Fuel consumption is, not surprisingly, in a different class to the RAV4 with quoted figures in the mid 40's mpg for the 1.2. I haven't had the car long enough to do my own analysis but it is clear that I'm going a lot further between fill ups. All round visibility is good with no noticeable blind spots, although the wing mirrors are a little small and tricky to line up.
Exterior~ I actually think this is quite an attractive car. It may lack the design flourishes of its prettier French cousins, I'm thinking of the Renault Clio or Peugeot 207 (or 206 given the age) but the simple lines carry a certain Italian style and are an improvement on the bland previous model. While not trying to be too gender specific, if the Clio and 207 are rather girly I suspect that an 18 year old lad would be quite happy driving this. The rear light clusters run the height of the rear window and the overall look is quite rakish, I also think the revised badging is an improvement over the Fiat badge of the early nineties. My model comes with steel wheels and lacks hub caps but with a nice set of alloys or even good quality 'caps in place I think this would look pretty good. The car feels solidly built; doors open without any creaking or hanging and close with a satisfying 'thunk'. There are no disturbing noises when driving and it feels as sturdy as the German and Japanese cars I've had recently.
Interior~ For such a small car the interior is surprisingly spacious. The front seats and steering wheel are height adjustable and there is plenty of travel to accommodate taller drivers, although this will compromise rear leg room significantly. The rear will seat three adults. Although not in luxurious comfort they will each have their own space and should not be leaning on each other at every corner. Head room front and rear is unlikely to be a problem for most. With child seats in the back getting the kids in and out is a bit of a chore and although this makes an adequate stop gap it isn't really up to the job as a family car. But then it isn't really meant to be. The seats are comfortable and supportive and show no signs of sagging. The materials used in the interior are of a good quality. I'll be honest and say I expected the dashboard and switches to feel cheap but that is not the case. It has a solid, good quality feel to it and the controls are easy to find and operate. Build quality is also a lot better than I expected. Given that this is a courtesy car and therefore the people using would not have treated it as carefully as they would their own wear and tear is at a minimum. There are no shakes or rattles, nothing to give cause for concern in fact. There isn't a great deal of storage in the cabin, beyond a standard sized glove box and pair of drinks holders you are left with several trays around the dashboard. These aren't particularly useful as they are in full view from outside and are likely to be magnets for rubbish more than anything else. The boot is a good size for the class of car and should be adequate. The rear seats fold flat but don't split which could prove inconvenient. The stereo is Blaupunkt but not especially impressive. With a tape deck but no CD it feels very basic and the speakers are not very good.
Ownership~ I don't own this car so can't comment on long term ownership, but the car seems relatively cheap to buy and run. These cars depreciate quicker than you can burn money so buying new is a poor option. Fiat dealers also seem quite keen to offer aggressive deals on new cars so if buying nearly new you need to be sure you're getting good value.
Costing £8500 new, What Car gives a private sale valuation of £4000 for this three year old model, but that seems high to me and given the choice in this sector I would expect to be able to pick up a good one for nearer £3500 and for that price you are getting quite good value.
Fuel and servicing costs are good for the class and being insurance group 4 it would make a good choice for a first car.
Conclusion~ I have been pleasantly surprised with this car. It is nice to drive and is of a much better quality than I expected. As first cars go I think this could be well worth considering.
*********************************************************** *** Update: After several weeks living with this pleasant model the garage informed me that they needed it back as it had to be returned to the leasing company. Curiously, they replaced it with an almost identical model of the same age and virtually the same mileage. Unfortunately this one turned out to be a complete dog of a car.
The dashboard fascia was cracked and the entire interior showed extensive signs of wear. Seats were lumpy, doors creaked and there were more rattles and squeaks than you would think possible. The engine was noisier and it was a thoroughly unpleasant experience to drive it. Thankfully I only had it for a couple of weeks. Suffice to say, if I'd had this car first my review above would have been very different.
The lesson here is that if you do intend to buy one of these be very careful. A thorough visual inspection and lengthy test drive will be in order. A full service history should be expected. There may well be good examples available as my initial experience has shown but equally you could find yourself saddled with a banger.
Advantages: Great Looks, Low Tax, Cheap Insurance Disadvantages: Ride Hieght, Slight Roll On Cornering
Having recently handed my little Saxo over to my little sister for her lessons and run around. Its time to look for a new car, So I came accross a really nice "Fiat Punto Active Sport 1.2i 8v". Read below to find my opinion of this car so far.......
Performance~ This car is awesome on petrol, Obviously depending on the way its driven its averagin about 48ish MPG. ALthough not as responsive as the saxo was and requires higher revs in lower gears ... ...and suspension set up as the car feels very high, and also as if it is going to roll when taking corners at speed.
Exterior~
The Active Sport variant of the Punto is in one word "sexy", Its got curves, and straight lines in all the right place. Again a slight draw back is the gap between the top of the wheels and the botton of the wheel arch, but thats nothing that cant be sorted with a good set of lowering springs. The standard Active sport definately ...

Advantages: Small Outside, Large Inside, Fun and Low Cost! Disadvantages: Handling on windy day is awful.
...Tax paid for me by Fiat for one year, not sure whether or not this was a deal, but always ask the dealer when purchasing. It can't hurt to ask, spending £7000 on a car, tax is nothing to them. However, if not, due to the carbon emissions, the car tax is only £110 a year, less than £10 per month. Worth the while.
As for fuel consumption, i do about 24 miles to work and back for 5 days a week and can get by on £10 of petrol. However, one concern is how lightweight the car is......driving along on a windy day certainly takes the wind out of your sails. you spend more time trying to control the car than enjoying the driving experience.
I absolutley love my little car, i think it can give any small car a run for its money on space, reliability and performance. It may ...

Advantages: Great looks.. fuel economy.. Sporty interior, value Disadvantages: A bit guttless for overtaking..stiffish ride
A stylish, modern looking car with great looking sporty interior. Firm, comfortable bucket seats.Suprisingly spacious for a small car with loads of storage nooks and crannies in doors and dash. This model comes with a nice set of alloys but metallic paint is £295 extra but worth it.Great sounding 6 speaker cassette radio system (cd cost £150 extra).

Advantages: Cheap, economical Disadvantages: Servicing expensive, noisy, lightweight and problematic
My last car was a Fiat Punto 1.2 8v active, a 53 reg. I bought it brand new, as I wanted to have a brand spanking new car for once, rather than inherit someone elses problems.
The car was excellent initially, very cheap to run, nippy in the city, and to be honest, extremely reliable. The interior was plush yet basic, with electric windows and a fairly nice dash set out.
I then took a job which involved a 60 mile round trip every day, and this is ... ...you have to stick with Fiat to keep the warranty, and you may find that many parts aren't actually covered on the warranty, as I did. You will also find it extremely hard to book the car in for anything on the warranty, yet if you want a service, or non warranty job, they can fit you in straight away - funny that!
I would definitely recommend the punto as a town car, but if you intend doing any serious mileage journeys, I would forget it. ...

Advantages: bags of space, good mpg, quiet runner Disadvantages: cheap audio system,
i've been driving one of the new shape puntos for just over a year now, I mainly use it to drive to college and back, but I have drove it from the north west down to norfolk and back and didn't have any problems what so ever, infact I havent had any problems with the workings at all other than the air bag warning light keeps coming on, which basically means you have to phone up you're nearest dealer and get it all reset which is a bit of a hassel.
... ...height and lumbar adjust as well as the standard seat angle adjustment which goes totally flat thats right i've even slept in my punto haha, the rest of the interior is a bit bland surrounded by masses of grey plastic, but at night everything glows a lovely amber.
controls wise the electric windows control has been placed in the middle of the dash under the stereo, which does stop you fumbleing around like in most cars where the controls are next ...

Good acceleration to the car, considering the weight with a 1.8 you can imagine the car can really fly. Great turning circle for the car. Good overall views, nicely positioned gear stick, all round an impressive speedy mini car
sometimes sounds when reving high that you are driving a lawn mover, steering feels slightly heavy in comparison to similar cars at high speeds. Has temremental head garsket-+ (*)
