BEWARE ; this game -will- become a part of you and is an experience that you will never forget. Yes, cheesy sounding, but totally and utterly true!
After being introduced to the eighth installment in the Final Fantasy series by a friend, I was desperate to try out Final Fantasy 7, after seeing so many excellent reviews. So, from the second that I popped disc 1 into my Playstation and the fantastic music and intro started up, I was hooked.
Even though the last time I played this game was years ago, this game is still the greatest in my opinion, and also many gamers too. No other game really comes close to the overall quality of this.
You assume the role of Cloud Strife, a cold-hearted mercenary, who accepts a mission from a group of eco-warriors who are trying to save the world from the planet-draining, money making Shinra Corporation and the evil former leader of the Shinra Army,
Sephiroth.
It may, at first come across as your basic "good guys save world from bad guys" type of game, but the plot certainly thickens and there are many gobsmacking, exciting twists and turns and sub-plots and games - like snowboarding down mountains and racing away from enemies on a motorbike to name but a few - to play along the way. (And this is coming from your average teenage girl who leads a normal life, and suddenly got hooked playing a Playstation game!)
As your journey progresses, you will interact with hundreds of individual characters, monsters and animals (like Chocobo's, coloured birds whom you can ride around on, and even breed!) visit many detailed places and environments (even an addictive theme park built in the middle of the desert) and truly feel connected with the characters.
I won't even start on the gameplay, but I will mention this - apart from weapons which you can upgrade, each of your characters have special slots, which you can fill with magic, or "materia". The energy of the planet is derived and turned into materia, also known as Mako crystals. Materia have many different functions, like casting magic - an example being FullCure, a healing ability and Barrier, a defence ability - increasing your abilities - an example being Sense and Throw - and summoning god-like creatures to aid your plight - a few being Leviathan, Kjata and Knights of the Round. Your materia can even grow like your characters when you gain EXP - experience points, to help your characters gain levels to become stronger - and AP - just think of these as experience points for your materia. The more points your materia have, the stronger they are and the more functions they have. Also, Limit Breaks, strong attacks and abilities you can use when you are weak come into play.
The real things that blew me away were the gutwrenching music, and the brilliant movies intergrated flawlessly into the action. Did I mention that there is over 120 minutes worth of these? It's certainly value for money, it's like a free trip to the cinema over and over again! During one scene where a certain person dies, I actually cried because the music and the movie itself was just so overwhelming - tee-hee. Look out for that one!
The only thing that let the game down was the graphics... they felt too "cartoony" and anime like for a rather deep and moody game, and the quality of them was rather poor, but that's just my opinion. But hey, as the game was released in 1997, Square can't be to blame for that, can they? But it's nothing to worry about, as everything else the game offers makes up for this minor flaw.
My opinions can't even begin to explain how outstanding this game is; you need to play it for yourself to understand. I don't think I've ever heard a bad word about this game, and if I ever do, I'll be surprised. I truly can't fault this game. If you don't have this game, you don't know what you're missing, and believe me, you NEED this one! It's a total classic that every gamer should own.
As a matter of fact, a friend of mine borrowed it two years ago and I haven't had it back since, because she can't stop playing it, hehe! Thank god I'm getting it back soon, as I can't wait to play my favourite game again!

Thank's for the comments! At vialdana, I'm pretty sure that FF7 is available on PC... and to anyone who still wants to buy this game today, don't let your friends borrow it, you may never get it back, hehe :) - Gemma

The best game ever made! I thought the graphics were really impressive for the time though - it's a bit unfair to downrate them by today's standards because technology is constantly moving forwards and they pushed the PSOne hard in 1997. Otherwise, an excellent review :) tom
