After playing Kingdom Hearts (due to by obsession with Disney) and loving it I decided to move over to the Final Fantasy range. I was a huge fan of FFX and lost a couple of months of my life while playing it. So gripped on the story, I impatiently waited for the sequel to come out. When it finally did as much as I enjoyed it I was also extremely disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the graphics where exceptional and the story line was good too but the new battle sequence (with 'dresspheres, levelling up etc) was overly complicated and I refuse to replay the entire game over again for less than 5% to get the perfect ending. All that aside, there are loads of different elements to the game. Not the best in the FF series but still worth the time if you're a dedicated fan.

> Story Line <
The game starts with a short but amazing opening song sung by who you think is Yuna but is actually Leblanc. Leblanc has stolen Yunas dressphere and soon after you are in a battle to get it back. You are introduced to the other two characters called Paine (new) and Rikku (returning from FFX). From now on you will mainly play as the character Yuna where walking around freely. When in battle you have control over all three characters. You soon learn that Kimari had found a sphere (like a little movie) with what looked like her lost love Tidus (from FFX). The objective of the game is to locate Tidus and be reunited with him but this ends up only being a small part of the story. With sin now gone there is a struggle for power and a thirst for power from two groups known as New Yevon and the Youth League. There are several choices to be made throughout the game including choosing a side. Each action is rewarded with a percentage amount but the main reward is seeing the story unfold in different ways if you have played it more than once.

> Playing the game <
The new FF has similar traits to the last but is also totally different. The first obvious thing is playing with Yuna instead of walking around as Tidus. The second is that travel is a lot easier and early on in the game you are able to access most places via the Celsius - an airship. Each place has its own storyline but is not always triggered until you have completed another storyline. I used the walkthrough when I played it and it really helped. I do feel as if I would have missed a lot though had I of not used it. The game also gives you choices. It's not a straight road. There are simple little things like how to answer a question and others include big things like which side to give important information to. Your choices little or no future affect on the story. Others then control the story line. This means you have to think carefully about each thing and the possible outcome of it.

The biggest difference is all to do with battle. Unlike in FFX when you take turns in battling, FFX-2 has a real time layout. Each character has a time bar by their name and each time it reaches its peak you are able to battle again. The higher level your stealth is, the faster it tops back up. So when playing, Rikku is faster than the others because she is younger and faster. This works for the enemies too so if you just decide to stand there you will end up being destroyed. This means that the battle now has a mixture of strategy and quick thinking - which at times can be extremely frustrating as you don't have time to think about a plan.
Another element of battling is collecting dresspheres and garment grids.
Dresspheres enables the person possessing it to change into whatever it is. There are loads of different dresspheres and each gives you different abilities. For example, a white mage dressphere enables you to heal people and use other white magic. A black mage enables you to use elemental magic and other black magic. Each one has their own special abilities that others won't have and also have the ability to alter your personal stats up or down. Like when you wear the berserk dressphere your speed goes down. So you need to think very carefully about what dressphere you are going to use before each battle.
The garment grid enables you to change your dressphere during battle even though there are catches. The grid can hold between 3 to 7 dresspheres and they are all placed in different places. You can only jump one space from one dressphere to the other and each jump moves as one turn so you when going into battle or when you are particular areas you need to think about where you should place each one on the grid and which grid you should use.
Both garment grids and dresspheres are collected throughout the game. You collect some automatically while playing the main storyline. Others need extra time and attention and involve going out of your way. But they are worth the time as can help significantly at other times in the game.

The thing that I loved the most was that being a fan of FFX and waiting for the new one to come out I was hoping the main storyline would be good. It wasn't everything I had hoped but I loved that there where loads of returning characters. Not just the big ones either, some small ones that brings a smile to your face. The places you have seen so many times in FFX are still there and you can see how the end of sin has enabled them to grow and build which is cool too. For example, in FFX Besaid island is ravaged by sin but by the sequel it is totally rebuilt and better than ever. It's nice to see that the big things have been kept but all the little things that the fans love are there too.

Just like the rest of the FF range there is also loads of extras to do. You can stick to the storyline if you wish but you miss all the extra things including reunions, extra weapons and dresspheres and other locations. The best way to find out all of this is by using a walkthrough either by buying one or using the internet.

> Sound <
Wow where to start. The sound is amazing. There are two songs that come to the top of my head that I really loved. They where recorded properly and it's obvious they where written especially for the game but they still had a personal touch too. The entire returning characters original voices where there (if they weren't I couldn't tell the difference). The background noise is constant. If you're in a temple then you can hear Yevons song clearly throughout just as if you are in a busy town there is constant chatter and movement. Each area has their own 'theme song'. Some have been taken from the original game, which is a happy memory trigger, and some are new. All reflect the area perfectly though and puts you in the ring frame of mind for the situation. The only thing that is annoying is listening to the same battle song over and over. Gets frustrating.

> Controls <
The controls are pretty simple. You just use your R stick to navigate Yuna around. You press X to talk to people and if necessary reply too. When in battle you have drop down menu's to go through. Sometimes this is difficult if you know what you want and you need it now, not in ten seconds. Shortcuts for frequently uses abilities would have been useful.

> Other Notes <
Availability is easy and there's a price to match too. I saw it in HMV the other day for only £10 and if you use EBay you could probably get it for half that.
The length of the game depends on how much you want to do. If you just want to follow the main storyline then it will take a max of 10 hours. If you want to do all the extras - which I would recommend - then you could double or even triple that time. As said before, I think the walkthrough really helps.

> My view <
FFX and its sequel is my only experience to the FF range. From other fans that have played ones before I am told FFX/FFX-2 are both nothing in comparison to the others before it. However as I am new to it I have really enjoyed it. I would seriously recommend buying FFX before this one so you get a better feel for the story and a want, no a need to find out where Tidus is and help in any way possible. Plus get a true understanding to Yunas story. FFX-2 in no way as good as the first one but it was a necessary sequel which I still enjoyed and would play again. Now I'm just waiting for the next FF to come out this summer!
