Dishwashers are very much a part of our busy lives. I have had a couple of different machines during the last 22 years, the first was bought when as a mother of 3 young children I was very ill and standing at the sink washing dishes was a exhausting. But, although some people say they would rather enjoy the companionship of doing the dishes together, actually it is far more hygienic to use a dishwasher than wash and dry dishes. Fact. A used, damp tea towel can harbour up to 30,000,000,000,000 (30 trillion) colonies of bacteria - such is the rate at which bacteria multiply. Fact. Dishwashers will reduce the spread of germs.
A dishwasher is washing the dishes in temperatures of 50-70°C, a far higher temperature than hands can tolerate
But to enable it to do its job and keep your dishes sparkling clean the machine must be kept clean, free from grease and lime scale. We are fortunate and live in a soft water area in Scotland, but I know of friends and family who suffer with lime building up in their machines. It can block the water jets in the rotary arms and leave mineral deposits on your dishes and cutlery. Lime scale may not be a problem, but grease certainly is and a horrible layer has formed on the rubber seal at the base of the door. I usually wipe it with some Jif cleaner and have tried various sprays but the grease has actually baked on during the high temperatures and is really hard to remove. My dishwasher is elderly and has washed hundreds of loads of dishes, and I am keen to keep it working. The interior metal glistens, the outside is showing a little wear and tear, but not too bad, but as hygiene is important, the grease worried me, so I was so pleased to read about a new product by Finish that I could put into my machine and it would "Eliminate grease and Lime scale".
Finish dishwasher products are well known and trusted so I searched the shelf in Tesco and found this little bottle which was going to perform a miracle on my dishwasher. Quite pricey if I remember rightly about £3.50, but I popped it into my trolley and decided to give it a try.
The dishwasher washed my dishes, and for the first time in ages I was keen to empty it! It is a job no-one likes in our house, possibly even worse than drying dishes, as it involves finding a home for the dishes which seem to multiply when they are getting washed!
The bottle contains 250ml of liquid containing natural orange and lemon oils. Naturally, I could not smell it as the bottle was sealed, and I was not sure if sniffing would be dangerous, as there is a warning to keep away from children, to keep away from eyes, and not to mix with other products. Not to ingest, but if ingested to seek medical advice. I had read the instructions and peeled off the sticky label over the cap on the bottle, and placed the bottle upside down in the cutlery tray. There was a wax seal, which prevented the liquid running out, but which I presumed melted during the process. Little pictures helped make the instructions really clear. The cycle was to be at least a minimum 65degree C, so I choose the hottest one.
The wonderful smell of citrus fruits greeted me when I walked into the kitchen to check the progress. I was picturing this little bottle of liquid working hard inside my machine. I knew I didn't have a lime scale problem, so all it had to do was get rid of the grease and leave my machine sparkling clean and ready to wash the next load of dishes.
At last it had finished! With bated breathe, I opened the door. Gleaming bright! Wonderful, fresh smelling. Fantastic, I thought well worth the money. I knelt down, and ran my hand along the seal. Oh YUK! The grease was still there. It had left all the metalwork gleaming, but didn't have appeared to have sorted out the grease problem. Discouraged, I set to with my faithful Jif cleaner and a cloth and removed some grease, perhaps it was a little easier to remove, but that could have been the effect of the hotter wash.
The producers - Finish suggest you use the product every month for optimum results. (I didn't do this so maybe the grease would have got less over the following months.)
Call me mean if you like but I would rather use my Jif and save up my £3.50s because in a year I will have £42.00, so will be able to buy a new dishwasher after a few years!
