providers. This is a completely new edition of the ever-popular First Aid Manual. As in the previous edition, all the first-aid procedures are illustrated photographically to give clear and comprehensive guidance. However, the new First Aid Manual has been completely restructured: more information is covered in fewer chapters. Background information and basic techniques are brought together in two chapters. Life-saving procedures for all ages of casualty are presented in a new format. First-aid treatments are presented, where possible, in head-to-toe order, to make information easier to find. The Manual comes with a quick-reference booklet featuring step-by-step procedures for emergency first aid, which can be kept in your first-aid kit. The new First Aid Manual is readable, user-friendly and accessible.

This book is one which absolutely every household and workplace should have; it cannot be recommended too highly.
I am not medically qualified to say whether all the advice in it conforms to current guidelines, but because it is regularly updated it is unlikely to be out-of-date. Moreover, it contains only the very best of advice available at the time of publication (the present 7th edition is dated 1999).
The point is that a manual such as this serves two functions. First, it reminds those who have received some first aid training of the appropriate course of action, especially since many who are trained will not put their skills into action on a regular basis. Second, it is clear and well-designed so that one who has had no training could, in an emergency, follow the instructions. It is not in any way a substitute for attending proper training courses run by the recognised authorities, but it is a reliable and essential back up to these.
At its price (just over £10) it represents an invaluable investment which should be high on everyone's shopping lists. Included with the main text, there is also a smaller booklet which summarises the most important situations and how to deal with them.
Well-illustrated and supplemented by diagrams and colour photos, the step-by-step guide is backed-up with fairly detailed and technical information for those who are interested, while not letting these detract from the impact of the message.
If you don't already have this book, buy it, read it, and keep up-to-date with revisions. And in any case, if you haven't already, attend a course so that you will know what to do. You can save someone's life.
This book is designed to be dipped into rather than read straight
through, or at any rate one chapter at a time. At over 600 pages, it
aims to be a comprehensive manual for a baby's first year.
The subjects covered are diverse : from preparing for a new baby to
FirstAid, from babies with special needs to post-natal depression.
But what I think are the best bits of the book are the twelve
chapters which deal with each of the months in a new baby's life.
These cover developmental stages, aspects which may be of concern
and useful advice.
I can recommend this book for any first-time parent - much better
to look it up than worry! And there is an excellent index... ...
