Advantages: Good for small fires. Disadvantages: There is a risk involved.
FIRE! Where is the extinguisher? How does it work? Shall I have a go?
These are the questions that normally get asked in the heat of the moment, not the best time to decide, and the answers are not always correct. I have been "Going to Blazes" for over thirty years now, and have seen a lot of flames.
I must say that while extinguishers do stop fires in their early stages, they also sometimes lure people to their deaths. Many people have opted for having a quick attempt at putting out a small fire, instead of ringing the Fire Service, often resulting in tears.
Different types of extinguisher:-
DP:- Standing for Dry Powder. This powder is basically bicarbonate of soda, it does make a mess, but powder is easy to hoover up.
FIRE BLANKET :- Not an extinguisher, strictly speaking, but a very good extinguishing media. These are ...
Advantages: Portable and compact Disadvantages: None if used correctly.
This review is based on my experience, and all opinions here are my own.
ADVANTAGES:-
This is dedicated equipment that stays on a bracket on the wall, is always there when needed, not a case of "where did I leave that extinguisher?"
the equipment is reasonably cheap.
It is small and compact.
It gives peace of mind.
It also complies with health & safety regulations.
DISADVANTAGES:-
The equipment may get stolen or vandalised.
It has a "use by" date, after this time, some items must be discarded and replaced, whether they have been used or not.
This may give someone a false sense of security, enough to go into a fire, or to treat someone incorrectly, when medical attention is required, wasting time and perhaps more.
The contents of the first aid kit may well be good, but require a competent first aider to use.

Advantages: CAN PUT OUT SMALL FIRES IN THE EARLY STAGES. Disadvantages: CAN PUT PEOPLE AT RISK "HAVING A GO"
I am writing this review, on the basis that someone has already decided, they need a Fireextinguisher. I will just go through what they will be getting, and offer a few options. Firstly, while extinguishers can stop fires in the early stages, they can also lure people to their deaths. Many people have decided to have a quick attempt at putting a small fire out, instead of calling the Fire Service, often with dire consequenses.
TYPES
----------
BCF (bromochlourodiflouromethane) used on all fires, beware of fumes, can be used on electrics. Evaporates so no mess. I have included these as there are stil many about, however they are now replaced by:-
FOAM Chemical foam, harmless. (but wet, so not for electrics) Leaves behind a foam that needs to be cleaned up, but no real hassle.
WATER Same as above as regards electrics ...
