We have three smoke alarms in my house, two downstairs and one on the landing. The one we have on the landing is this one that I am reviewing now; the first alert alarm with escape light. We bought it because we felt that it was necessary to have three in the house due to its size. I hope that the two downstairs will detect the smoke first and the third acting as a safety net. I was really attracted to this one because of the light; it is exceptionally bright and it states that it will be able to shine through smoky environments.
