...Vorderman we'd both heard of First Plus.

They're also part of the Barclays group, which is who the other half banks with anyway, so the decision was made.

The 6.6% APR was an 'Exclusive Rate' and you had to apply through moneysupermarket.com in the first instance. You could fill in the details on screen and have someone call you back or call them directly on their 0870 number (up to 12p / minute then!).

...First Plus loan was the one to go for - Nemo turned out that it only applied to people that we're borrowing up to 60% of their home's value. As we we're going for the full 100% value (110% maximum) we'd made the right choice.

The questions we're as you'd expect, how much do you earn, what to you want to borrow, what are you doing with the money, what's you house worth, how long have you lived there...inside leg measurement…

Quick review of First Plus

The worst place ever.Avoid like the plague. They put your interest rate up when they feel like it and NEVER put it down.Oh and don't take out their PPI too, they add it to the loan upfront. Its cover is for 5 years but you pay for it over the full term of your loan ......loads of interest. Put it this way We have been paying for 26 months and out of about 13 ,000 we've paid them only 1,500 has come off the loan. They are making millions. ...

FirstPlus Homeowner Loans

Advantages: Very easy to speak to
Disadvantages: Loan secured on your home

My husband and I applied for our FirstPlus Loan through Moneysupermarket.com. Staggeringly with all our credit and store cards and our car loan it worked out that we owed £52,000!!! We were paying £1200 a month on this, FirstPlus has now got that down to £400 a month. We can finally start living again. FirstPlus made it so simple. I fill out a form on Moneysupermarket.com and then a FirstPlus advisor rung me back. She then went through a few details ...
...this, which she said is the hardest bit over with and then put me through to Mike, my Account Manager. Mike was really helpful and went through everything that we owed, how much we earnt and how much equity we had in our house. He also went through the insurance really thoroughly. My paperwork arrived the next day with all the forms that we had to sign and complete. The good thing about this loan is that you have to provide FirstPlus with the names ...

An almost pointless service

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: No tracking. Insurance is no more than standard post.

advantage. You can collect the item from the Post Office which is not possible with couriers. At the moment, there are plenty of Post Offices. Problems There are a number of problems with the service. Insurance When you send an item in the post, you can ask for a proof of postage from the Post Office. This will insure your item for up to 100 times the price of a First Class stamp (£36). By paying the extra 72p, how much extra insurance do you get? Want to guess? None. All you are doing is paying them 72p for evidence against your claim. Which they will use against you. Delivery Time There is no guarantee on delivery dates. You mearly pay for First or Second Class plus 72p. They aim to delivery First Class by the next day, Second Class within two to three days. Notice the word 'aim', not 'guarantee'. Overall This ...

Forget about other banks

Advantages: Superb customer service and no hassle at all
Disadvantages: none

collect it two days later. This is not convenient for some people who needs the statement urgently to apply for a foreign visa for overseas holidays. So far, I have absolutely no problem with HSBC. And I am glad that it is the first UK bank I use. Plus, HSBC is gonna have online banking soon.... ...

Halifax Unsecured Loan

Advantages: No monthly repayments for first three months
Disadvantages: APR rate can get steep up to nearly 23%

I applied for an unsecured loan with Halifax, I really wasn't sure where to start as I'm new to the loans market - I'd never considered one before but I was looking for a new flat and wanted the cash for a deposit. I think it is wise to compare loans before you choose because there are so many out there!! I used financial comparison sites to help me, one I used was Which Way To Pay (www.whichwaytopay.com) , they have a really good breakdown system of each loan. Halifax were straigh to the point and I was happy with the no repayments for the first 3 months system as that was perfect for getting settled in my new flat! Plus they are good for the fact that the monthly repayments are fixed so you don't get caught further down the line! ...
