Advantages: tough, easy to use, practical, creative and fun Disadvantages: quite expensive
It was my daughter's fourth birthday the other day and as always we struggled to decide what to buy her for a present - I mean, what do you buy a little girl who has so many toys already? Anyway, I was browsing on the Early Learning Centre website looking for inspiration when I came across the Fisher Price digital camera! Ah ha! I thought, this could be just the thing especially as my daughter has always had a worrying fascination with her Daddy's ... ...photos with that! What's more, I could get this Fisher Price digital camera in pink!
Now, I have to tell you that this camera is not cheap - at £60 it really was at the top end of what I wanted to pay (but being members of the ELC birthday club we did get 20% off which made the price much more manageable!) However, for this money you have to realise that you are not buying a toy but a real camera which can do most of the things that ... more
It was my daughter's fourth birthday the other day and as always we struggled to decide what to buy her for a present - I mean, what do you buy a little girl who has so many toys already? Anyway, I was browsing on the Early Learning Centre website looking for inspiration when I came across the Fisher Price digital camera! Ah ha! I thought, this could be just the thing especially as my daughter has always had a worrying fascination with her Daddy's rather expensive digital camera and has always wanted to take photos with that! What's more, I could get this Fisher Price digital camera in pink!
Now, I have to tell you that this camera is not cheap - at £60 it really was at the top end of what I wanted to pay (but being members of the ELC birthday club we did get 20% off which made the price much more manageable!) However, for this money you have to realise that you are not buying a toy but a real camera which can do most of the things that any digital camera can do.
As you can see from the picture the camera is quite big and sturdy and there is nothing too fiddly for little fingers to have to manage! It is actually described as 'kid tough' which it has to be with little ones about. This really means that it will take a lot to damage this camera so you don't need to worry too much if it gets dropped on the floor or is bashed about a bit! This was definitely a consideration with my daughters!
So the camera is pretty easy for little children to hold and there are only a small number of buttons that they need to press and understand. These are all different colours as well so it definitely helps them to remember which one is which. The blue button is the most important one as this is the on/off switch. When this is pressed you hear a lovely whizzy whirly noise so you definitely know that it is on! Also, when you turn it on you can then see through the screen at the back. The button for actually taking pictures is green and is at the front in a very accessible place where they would be holding it anyway. It's just a simple one press and the picture is taken. The camera doesn't have any zoom features but for a four year old this really isn't very important. It does have a built in flash but it is the camera that decides whether this is needed or not!
So when your child is ready to take a photo there is not too much they have to think about - just look through the view finder and press the green button! They can see what they are going to be taking either by looking at the screen at the back or lifting the camera to their eyes and looking through the view finder. There is one for each eye, similar to binoculars, so they do not need to worry about having to scrunch one eye up in order to see!
As for all children, the most exciting time comes when they have taken their photo and they want to see what they have taken. As I said this is just like a grown up digital camera so immediately they can look at the screen and see what they have taken - my daughter was so excited to be able to do this straight away! There are two green arrows to press to take you through all the ones you have taken, and a red button to delete any you don't want. My daughter absolutely loves this and has been going around the last few days snapping, viewing and deleting to her heart's content! And as it is her camera, Mummy and Daddy are not constantly stopping her from ruining all their precious photos!
More excitingly still, the camera comes with a cable and software so you can actually download them onto a computer and then print, edit or view as a slideshow. The possibilities are endless and there is no stopping our little photographer! And wahat sort of photos are being taken in our house at the moment? Well, Mummy and Daddy are having to be on the look out at all times, because they never know when our little one is going to sneak up and take a photo! Also most of the toys have had their photos taken, as has the furniture, the crockery and even the blades of grass in the garden! And can we tell what they are? Well, most of the time yes, although we are seeing some strange angles and close ups! Well, the art of photography does take years to master! Having said that though, I am really pleased we bought this camera for our daughter as it has really captured her interest and imagination and she is learning about photography as well - you never know, it might encourage her to take it uo as a real hobby when she is older!
The camera does require batteries in order to run (four AA ones and probably best to get rechargeable ones as they don't last long) and it has an inbuilt memory which allows my daughter to take about sixty photos, which is probably plenty in one go! We also bought a hard pink case to keep it in at the same time and this cost £15, but will be worth it if it helps keep it safe!
So overall both my daughter and I thoroughly recommend this camera as it is tough, easy to use, practical, creative and fun! And most of all - it's her's - which means she'snot after our camera any more!
My 5-year-old son loves to use my digital camera and so for Christmas I decided to buy him one of his own. I wanted a child friendly camera that would be tough enough to withstand some abuse yet still function like a real camera. I decided on the Fisher Price Kid tough digital camera after reading a positive review on this site.
The next thing was to find the camera at the best possible price. However to my dismay this camera was out of stock at ... ...Lewis. I eventually located one at Boots .com for just under £60. So was it money well spent?
What's in the box?
*******************
It was with great excitement that my son opening his presents on Christmas morning. He was immediately impressed with his new camera. It isn't the easiest of packaging to open! The box contains the camera, clear instructions, a strap, and a USB cable to connect to your computer. There are also 4 AA batteries and ...

Advantages: Keeps kids amused for ages, great range of features, very tough and durable Disadvantages: Batteries run out quick, picture quality not great
I'd seen the adverts on TV for these cameras quite a while before Christmas, they first became available in 2006, but I hadn't really noticed until the run up to Christmas that they were around. When I first saw it, I must admit I couldn't believe they had made a digital camera for kids! Wow, whatever next. They'll be making real working mobile phones for three year olds next!
Turns out this isn't the first time Fisher Price have launched a camera ... ...a very popular idea apparently.
So, I thought I'd buy for my little girl, she loves anything that makes her feel like a grown up, she also loves to figure out how to work things which makes this toy ideal for her. I live in the middle of nowhere so it was internet Christmas shopping for me this year - I love E-Bay so thought I'd have a look on there for it. Anyway, I found a very durable looking Fisher Price Kid Tough Digital Camera in pink (brand ...

Advantages: It is tough and waterproof. Disadvantages: Not really good enough quality to be used as a digital camera.
As the title suggests I am not a huge fan of this product. For the price you would expect to get a digital camera that is strong enough to survive your child. What you infact get is a large chunk of plastic that is tough and waterproof, so more like a paper weight or doorstop. You certainly do not get a digital camera. The picture quality is pointless, 1.3mp is just not worth having. I did wonder if it was my daughter, so gave her our old 5mp camera ... ...The first 1 she had we sent back as it was leaving a mark across the bridge of her nose due to having to push the button so hard to take a photo. They sent another camera out and it does indeed seem to have fixed that problem. The 2nd 1 seems to shut itself off straight away and you need to turn it on several times before it stays on. In honesty this does not matter as the camera is useless anyway. I phoned Fisher Price again and made a complaint ...

I was dubious about spending so much money on a camera for my four year old son, after all its great that he won't be able to break it but at nearly £50 for a camera with so few megapixels could it ever be worth it? It turns out that the lack of megapixels is not the problem with this camera at all. The major flaw is the shutter speed. It takes so long for a photo to be taken that it is incredibly difficult for me to keep the camera still enough ...

Advantages: great activity kit Disadvantages: none
I have been interested in scrapbooking for quite a while now and enjoy sorting out all my photos, mounting them on different bckgrounds and adding various captions and embellishments. Ever since we gave our four year old her FisherPricedigital camera for her birthday, I have been hoping that I can encourage her to get interested in the same thing. Therefore, I was delighted when, in Hobbycaraft just before Christmas, I spotted the 'It's My Life' scrapbook kit.
This is a starter scrapbook kit which contains everything you would need to get started. On the box it says that it is from age 7 to 97, and although my daughter is a bit younger than this, I felt it was something which we could do together (and as it turns out she loves it). Also, although it is aimed at children, you can see from the age range given that it would be entirely ...
