The Fisherprice Musical Lights and Sounds Gym was given to my son Alex when he was about a week old. It is suitable from birth onwards, and will keep newborns through to sitting babies amused.
The gym features dangling toys, flashing lights and music (as suggested by the name!):
Dangling toys:
Three different brightly coloured shapes - a moon, a star and a 'sun', each with little dangly flaps for baby to each up and grab.
Flashing Lights:
Four different coloured lights on the underside of the arch which flash rhythmically to the music
Music:
The gym plays 8 different tunes including twinkle twinkle little star, in the merry month of may, the farmer's in the dell, and other well know tunes. These are activated by the movement of the dangly toys. This encourages hand eye coordination by rewarding the child with a tune when they have played with a toy.
There are two settings to the play gym - one for younger babies and one for older babies. The younger setting needs one activation, to which it then plays all the tunes in a loop continuously - ideal for a younger child who either can't reach or doesn't have the necessary coordination. The second setting is for older children, and it plays a different tune one at a time for each time a toy is hit. There is also an 'off' position so it doesn't drive you mad when moving it!
The gym can be set to two height levels, again depending on the stage of the child. Use the lower setting for lying babies, and the higher setting for when the child is sitting up.
There are also activities on the side of the gym - rotating balls on one side and a mirror on the other. Even if the child is too young to play with the other activities, I found my son was mesmerised by the mirror right from newborn.
All in all, it is an entertaining, developmental toy, priced at a reasonable £19.99 in Toys R Us (though currently on special offer with £5 off!)
