We all read and hear about cot death nearly everywhere we go - it is in the papers, on billboards, everywhere...
So as a new mother and reading and hearing about these sort of things, it is quite natural to want to have a bit of constant security in knowing that your baby is sleeping safe and sound in his or her cot.
Therefore I bought the Fisher-Price Sounds & Lights Monitor at Babies 'R US. At the time I thought that it was a good deal at £25.00 because it claimed to do everything that I expected a good monitor to do.
The Fisher-Price Sounds and Lights monitor claims to have a variable light display that lets you see the sounds the baby makes. There are 5 lights displayed on the parent's monitor which are meant to allow you to see the baby's level of activity, but, after 4 months, I am still waiting to see how this actually works. I have a very calm and peaceful baby who hardly ever cries and the lights NEVER change except for the occasional and very rare scream or cry.
I was hoping for a monitor that displayed changes in my baby's breathing, but the thing never budges from a very faintly lit first dot of light (Mind you, I have it plugged into the mains so it is not a question of low batteries).
As a result I find myself having to walk into my baby's room several times a night because I am uncertain as to whether or not she is still breathing, fortunate to find that she still is!
You may be thinking, "Well, just turn up the volume so that you can hear your baby breathing if you can't actually see your baby breathing on the monitor". Well, I've already tried that and it didn't work. The monitor claims to have crystal clear reception that is meant to pick up every sound that the baby makes. But I don't hear any baby sounds. All I hear is interference and the echo of water dripping in the sink from the bathroom because the monitor seems to be able to pick that up fine. But can I hear my baby? NO! Panic hits again, so once more I find myself having to walk into my baby's room to see if she is breathing. Luckily once again, I notice that she is.
Aren't monitors meant to give you a peaceful nights sleep? This monitor is making me forget what sleep is, because I am not getting any!
Oh they are good for something though! They are a great way for you to listen in on neighbours you never thought you had. Recently I made the mistake of turning the monitor off in the nursery but kept the one in our bedroom on. Not long thereafter my husband was woken up to someone shouting "Get that off, its too small" and "You're a bad little girl" - it was all quite funny, but were there also people listening to us? What a frigtening thought! So Iguess that that means that there is some truth in Fisher Price's claim that the monitors have durable antennas that help allow for a greater range and clarity - heck, they are so good for spying on your neighbours, I could set up a "neighbourhood watch" from my bedroom
The monitors also have two channels to minimise interference, but in my experience, there is nothing minimised, because that is all you get - interference (+ sounds of dripping water from a neighbouring room + sounds of neighbours calling your husband a bad little girl)
This monitor also has a low battery indicator,is mains or battery operated and it takes a 1 x9V batter which you have to buysepareately.
I would NOT buy this monitor because your baby's life depends on it, and so does your sanity. I'd say go for a digital or any other monitor for that matter that does what it claims to do!

that was a very good review, although the product could do with some improvement, a belated welcome from me, Sue

Doesn't really sound worth investing in - could do with one of these to keep track of my best mate though, shame they don't stretch down the road! Lucie xxx

Blimey! £25 for a baby monitor? I bought a TOMY pair for £14-00 last year from Boots for my friend's newly born and she loves it. A very good first rvw by the way. Nar
