As soon as I received the pump I set to to install it. It was very easy to do, but I did make the mistake of not checking the size of hose required when I purchased it and discovered that mine was too small. I was cross with myself as I wanted to get it set up that day, so I would advise anyone buying this particular model that they make sure they have a 1" or 1.1/4" bore hose.
The pump has now been installed for two months and I am finding it extremely efficient. The anti-clog design is really good - I only clean the filter once a week and could leave it longer if necessary, instead of every day, thus saving a lot of time. I used to leave the pump off when going on holidays so that my neighbour would not have the worry of cleaning it. With the Fish Mate 4000 I can leave it on knowing that it will not clog up.
The Fish Mate 4000 Pond Pump is very efficient and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

TRY getting spares for this pump then think again. tried nearly every where and get the same answer.WE can not get spares from fishmate for these/there pumps.
So pray your pump does not go wrong,but at least make sure you have a back up ...

Re spares - just got a refurb kit for 18 ukp (inc p&p)..
This pump has struggled in my pond.
It gets clogged up really easily, grit gets into the impeller and it wears out the cheap plastic. I replaced the impeller twice under guarantee and then I was advised to get a pre-filter on it so I tried a kitchen scrubber.
This worked but got clogged up quickly (I have a dirty pond!) so then I tried a covering the whole thing in a washbag i.e. the ones you use to keep small items from getting lost in your washing machine - works a treat. Takes a lot longer to clog up and stops the algae from getting in to the system never mind the grit ! ...

Advantages: Interesting to watch Disadvantages: A lot of work
with all these fish my problems started - lots of fish = lots of food = lots of poo. I found myself buying loads of packets of floating pond sticks, very expensive. I now buy it in bulk 5kg at a time, they are called Pets Choice Pond Sticks, the fish love them. With regard to the poo I bought another much larger filter a Fishmate UV+Bio Filter and a new bigger pump a Fishmate4000 (see my review Fishmate4000PondPump). They work together very well and only need cleaning once a week, which was much better than twice a day.
From just looking at them no way could I tell the sex of my new arrivals, but it didn't take long to find out. Gosh! I would hate to be a female fish. The males chase them around the pond for hours roughly pushing them unceremoniously into the weed, sometimes leaving them gasping for breath on top of the weed ...
