Full review
This is another children's book published by Bloomsbury. The paperback version was published in 2002. Five Little Friends is written by Sarah Dyer and won the Bronze Nestle Book Prize in 2001. Five Little Friends was Sarah Dyer's first published children's book, and started life as part of a second year project at University. Her next book was title "Clementine and Mungo".

This book is all about five little friends who live in five statues. Each day the friends would come out of their statues and enjoy the world around them. One day they decided that they would each take the one thing they liked the best, so one took the sun, the second took the sky, a third took the land, the fourth took the sea and the last took the moon. They all took their item back to their statue to enjoy it. Unfortunately as you may have guessed their enjoyment of the objects didn't last long, as one by one each object either fell, died, or wouldn't shine. The friends decided the best thing to do was to return all the objects to their rightful homes, and enjoy the world as it was before.

This is a paperback book which contains 15 pages, with once again wipeable front and back covers. The book isn't that large although it is quite wide as the pages are printed in a landscape fashion rather than portrait. The book retails at £4.99 and is available from Amazon books, its ISBN is 0 7475 5949 X.

I found the story to be well written, easy to follow and truly original. The book has a very simple message to tell about sharing the environment around us with others. It is a lovely parable about the issues surrounding greed and sharing, and is written in an easy style so that children aged between 3 and 5 easily understand the message. This is a well designed and colourfully illustrated book. Each picture helps to tell the story and pass on its important message. Sarah Dyer has managed to portray this important life lesson is a lovely unsanctimonious fashion. I found the story very touching and appealing to all ages and I appreciated the unpatronising way she managed to narrate the story. This is a story book that gets read many times at home especially when I'm trying to convey to my children that sharing is the best option. I think this book would be ideal to explain the message of greed versus sharing to any small child and I heartily recommend the book to all.
