I love the Famous Five series so much that I not only devoured each book as a child, but I still re-read them even now!
I have a special attachment with "Five on a Treasure Island" because this is the first famous five book I ever read. In fact, this is the first book in the series (published in 1942). Having read all of the series, I must say that this book does set the tone for the rest of the stories. This is the book where Blyton introduces the characters of George, Dick, Julian and Ann, not forgetting Timmy the dog. The introductory language is simple, precise and straight to the point- which I believe would help children in not only understanding, but familiarizing themselves with the Five. George, for example, is already being introduced as a somewhat spoiled tomboyish child in Five on a Treasure Island- and this image will stick through all the series. However, Enid Blyton depicts George as being a lovable character, despite all her misgivings. Any one, child or adult, can see the impact and influence of her cousins over here. By the end of this book, she is already sharing her precious island with them!
This book also starts in depicting the investigative talent of the Famous Five. The plot is simple: Julian, Dick and Ann sent to spend their holidays at their aunt's and uncle's place in Kirrin Cottage. There they meet their cousin George and her dog Timmy. When they find a wooden box on a shipwreck, the Five decide to investigate and this takes them on their very first adventure ever! This book moreover shows the life of George and her family before we know them as being wealthy. Somehow, it will help in understanding Uncle Quentin's obsession in his work later on.
I personally believe that this first book is the best one in the series. It is light, warm and guaranteed to touch the heart of readers of all ages! The adventure portrayed in this one is slightly less complicated than in the other books, but "Five on a Treasure Island" is more centered on the growing relationships between the children. In addition, the book has some vivid description and imagery which will once again, help in understanding the other books which follow Treasure Island. George's scowl, for example, is described in such a way that whenever someone picks any other Famous Five book, the person can have the image of Geroge's scowl in his or her mind. Blyton does not give too many or too little description- just the right dose for you to imagine and invent your right Geroge Scowl!
There is a reason why I am still reading this book today. This is quite a masterpiece in my opinion. For parents who are looking for some nice vocabulary and phases to teach their kids, this is also the book for them.

Yes, I really have re-read this book of late. It was after a day out with Muffin and Spandex (yes the pseudonyms from my blog) where we sat on a hill having a picnic I remarked how 'Famous Five' it felt and back from the depths of my memory came the love I had for the adventures they had.
So I went to all my favourite charity (the first port of call for me with books) shops and some second hand book stores ... ...Island and how the Famous Five (Dick, George, Julian, Anne and Timothy the dog) save the day as you know they will.
I read the book within three journeys of the tube, to some very strange looks, and unashamedly told everyone I know how much I enjoyed it and thought they too should do the same. Yes it's a kid's book, and yes its quite one dimensional, but shouldn't we keep some of that inner child in us? This come highly recommended to anyone who ...

Advantages: Exciting story ,easy and compelling reading,first of a long series Disadvantages: A bit dated in its language
The famous 5 are 4 cousins, George 11 (really a tomboy named Georgina) and her 3 cousins , Julian 12, Dick 11 and Anne 10.
George has a dog she must keep in secret as he was a quite destructive puppy and is banned from her parents house , he is a brown mongrel dog and is called Timothy.
This is the first time George meets her cousins and she does not like them to begin with. She is quite happy the way her life is and doesn't want them interfering ... ...unlikely but never mind it is a story and I never questioned it when aged 11)an Island with a ruined castle and even a wrecked ship which is under the sea.
A treasure map is discovered by the children and confiscated by Georges strict father who then sells the story to the papers!!
The children must try to discover the treasure (if it exists) before the Island is sold (yes even though it was given to George) to developers who are really treasure ...

...21 books on the Famous Five by Enid Blyton. This is the start of many adventurous times for the main Characters Julian, Dick, George, Anne and not forgetting Timmy the dog. The story start out when Julian, Dick and Annes parents decide to send them to stay with there Aunt Fanny, Uncle Quentin and cousin Georgina. At the begining Georgina dislikes her cousins and is not willing at first to give them a chance. Georgina is as much like a boy in the ... ...George. This the first book is based around the exciting adventure they have on Kirren Island. If you want to know more I recommend you read the book. I read these books as a child and really enjoyed them after my own mother suggested I read them now my own children enjoy them as well. ...

Advantages: A loverly example of children with different abilities all enjoying friendship together Disadvantages: Sadly a little dated for these modern days when holidays without parents are not allowed.
Oh the memories that title brings back as I write this, innocent countryside fields, friendly farmers with spare milk, cheese & home baking that Anne delighted in getting at every available opportunity to feed her brothers Dick & Julian with & of course cousin George & the best of the Five, for me, Timmy the dog.
Setting up camp on George's Kirrin Island with no one to question their ability to cook or survive for days without the need of a telivision, ... ...Moving around England with no one objecting to their use of spare common or the corner of some empty field.
In later books they continue to go camping a lot, noticeably even then in Two seperate tents, One for boys & another for the girls & Timmy & also use a caravan complete with meeting members of a circus plus it's animals & no One ever mentions the words "dubious people" these Children are allowed to be with or "dangerous animals". ...
