The one we purchased was an attractive red colour, with black detail such as rubber to protect the lead where it joins. The lead is also available in a variety of colours.
There are three different modes available for easy use. 1) flexi- This is where the lead is pulled out to maximum length if the dog is moving away from owner. If the dogs is coming towards the owner however, the lead retracts. This means that the lead doesn't get tangled as there is no excess string. This is best when you don't mind your dog having a bit of freedom. I would not recommend this in crowded places or by roads.
2) The seconds 'mode' is temporary restraint This allows you to briefly stop your dog from having wandering capabilities. To do this you press and hold the button. This would be recommended if trying to get past a distraction quickly.
3) The other mode is restraint
This allows the owner to have the dog on a shorter lead without having to keep hold of the button. This is done by pressing the button then moving the lock on. I recommend this mode for crowded places and for the dogs to walk to heal.
Jerry would not have been able to enjoy the holiday as much as he did without the use of this lead. It allowed to explore a little further than we would have gone into bushes and other things. It also meant we could relax as he swam in the sea. We also used it as a restraint while we were at our accommodation so that he could sit and wander around outside. The ability to stop the lead at different lengths meant that we could restrain him so he could not go into anyone else's garden.
As much as we found the lead useful, we also found faults.
Firstly, when the lead was on lock and Jerry was moving around, it easily got trapped around his legs, so we had to untangle him. Sometimes this happened a lot, so we had to unclip him to untangle him.
Another problem with locking the lead we discovered when we were walking in the Norfolk Broads. Jerry was desperate to get to the water and was pushing through the reeds. We did not think this a problem until he came back a different way to that he had gone down. So now as he came back he was caught up in reeds and trying to take them with him. We had to persist for 10 minutes before we freed him as we didn't want to lose the lead. (It was expensive at £16.99)
Also, if the lead got wet, we had to extend it to its full lead and leave to dry. This was quite annoying as it took up quite a lot of room. Because we were using the lead on beaches, sand got caught in the mechanisms and meant that they sometimes got stuck. This was a problem as it was often the clip, so we couldn't put the dog back on his lead.
We also had problems with the lead wrapping around our legs and digging in. This could be a real hazard if the owner is walking alone, with no other person to assist.
As well as this, if the dog was running, he didn't understand the concept of the lead having a maximum extending length so would continue running. This meant that the lead would jerk and almost dislocate my arm.
The lead is made out of quite thin string, which we discovered was a problem when we were walking by sheep. Our dog was extremely excited and sprinted towards them. My mum grabbed the string as a secondary measure and got a horrible rope burn to her fingers.
Despite the problems with this type of lead, I would still recommend this. It can be dangerous, but if kept a close eye on and cleaned it regularly it would be fine. This lead requires caution but it is worth it as dogs do like their freedom.
Advantages: Useful training aid' can allow a difficult dog some controlled freedom Disadvantages: Dangerous if used incorrectly, can cause physical injury.
...straight? Well, buy a Flexi Retractable lead, get a large dog and you too can be Superman! On a normal lead a dog can try and take off (“Wow, that looks like that tasty little bitch from number 32. I’ll just go and say hello”), but can only go a step or two before the lead pulls him up short. On a flexi lead he can get up quite a turn of speed before he hits the end of the lead.
Let me explain how the lead works. The lead is coiled ... ...admit it, I have a Flexi lead. I have an elderly (sorry, Luce) rescue dog whom I cannot trust not to bite other dogs. She is always muzzled when she goes out, but she can still be frightening even when she can’t get her teeth into something. She’s developed the deafness that old dogs have – the one where they can’t hear commands, but can hear any movement which suggests that food might be available. The Flexi lead means that ...

...give another perspective.
The flexi lead is not a long term solution to an aggressive dog or one that will not come back when recalled. It is however proving to be an invaluable training aid.
We adopted a dog from a rescue kennels in March. A collie/german shepherd cross, Rebel was seven months old. Born in the kennels he was briefly homed at 10 weeks but returned to the kennels at three months old. When we adopted him, he was totally untrained, ... ...option, until we discovered the flexi lead was to keep Rebel on his head collar at all times - this did not allow him the freedom to run off his considerable energy and frustration.
With patient training it became evident that Rebel was a quick learner and wanted to please. He quickly progressed through the training classes at the dog club but had to be withdrawn at intervals due to his boisterousness with other dogs. Rebel will now respond not ...

...a stand dedicated to the Flexi lead. The Flexi lead is a 5 or 8 metre coiled lead, encased in a sturdy plastic handle. Whether you choose the 5 or 8 metre cord length, they both come in 3 sizes:
8 metre: Size 1 for Dogs up to 12kg/26Ib
Size 2 for Dogs up to 20kg/44Ib
Size 3 for dogs up to 50kg/110Ib
5 metre: Size 1.5 for Dogs up 12kg/26Ib
Size 2.5 for Dogs up to 20kg/44Ib
Size 3.5 for Dogs up to 50kg/110Ib
I bought and tried the 8 meter, size ... ...All is not lost though, Flexi leads also have a fully extending, 5 metre tape lead available in all sizes, unfortunately it was not available in an 8 metre length where we were shopping, we exchanged our classic lead for one of the tape leads, the compnay also produce a comfy handle version whereby the grip is made of a rubber material rather than plastic
All in all, slightly disappointing for us on this particular product in thier range, and the ...

...However, I actually won a flexi lead in a prize draw, luckily it was the right size for my dog, and it's proved worth it's weight in gold. In fact, I even went out and bought another one for my other dog I liked it so much, and although £10 does seem expensive for a dog lead, I believe that it is worth double.
The reason why I've found the lead so very useful is that I've recently moved to quite a built up area where it isn't always possible, or ... ...lead. The Flexi lead gives them much more freedom than an ordinary lead whilst keeping them safe. We can even play fetch with the dogs on their flexi leads, although it can be a little annoying when they run across each other and their leads get tangled up.
The flexi lead is also incredibly strong. My Border Collie has often made a mad dash after a cat until the lead has pulled her up short but even after several years of (mis)use it has never let ...

...the market. The flexi lead is great for bigger and stronger dogs as my friend’s dad’s are. It gives the handler much more control over the dog via the lead.
The handler can use the lead to keep the dog as far or as near as he/she wants. You use your thumb to stop the lead from expanding. The only thing is that don’t over do it, the lead doesn’t mean the dog is confined to it all day. The lead is good to train the dog, talk to it and over time it will understand you. Overall I have found it a very useful lead and it is much easier to handle the dogs and it means walking the ...
