Flextel offer a wonderful facility. Using this service you can register an account and attach a number of personal numbers to it.
The personal numbers begin 07010 and you can choose from the numbers they have left (except the really good/memorable ones which they understandably charge for).
You can then set these numbers to forward to your mobile phone or landline and there is no charge to you.
The caller does however have to pay a slight premium over normal mobile phone calls (the profit from which goes to Flextel to maintain this service).
The supposed reason for using this is to give out your number to people and not worry about it changing when you change your mobile, or to be able to redirect them to a different person at different times.
For this reason it does serve adequately, if a little expensive for the people calling.
The purpose I use it for is to give a phone number to companies when filling in forms. I need to give a number which can get to my mobile (so I can recieve the calls at home or work) but I don't want to give out my mobile number (because I don't want then sending unwanted SMSs and there is no way to block that yet).
The other reason for not giving out my real number is so that I can tell who has called by the number they have called (as most of these firms will withold the number called from) so I can tell who has sold my number to cold callers.
When I’ve finished my business with a company I can then stop using that number and get another, no more being rung up 6 months after blagging a free gift from a company by someone hassling me to buy something.

I've had an account with them for a while, the high charges put off random callers who acquired lists with your number on.
