I didn't take my eldest daughter swimming very much. To be honest, I wasn't very keen and neither was she. So when we did go swimming, I bought packets of disposablenappies from Tesco and regularly gave away half a packet or more to friends as my daughter grew out of them!
However, she doesn't need swim nappies any more and we now have a new bundle of girly fun in our household. I was much more keen to shift my pregnancy weight this time and as the creche at my gym won't take babies under 6 months old, I turned to swimming. Seeing how much I was enjoying my evening swim, my husband decided to get in on the act and before I knew what was going on, we'd got a family outing on our hands.
I looked around for disposable swim nappies for our 12-week-old daughter and couldn't find any small enough. I checked out teh Huggies website and found that they don't make them small enough for young babies!
So being the would-be earth mother-type that I am and loving my washable normal nappies, I looked for a reusable swim nappy.
I finally settled on the Floaties Aquanappy. They come in several cute designs, suitable for girls or boys and the smallest size they make is 3-6 months (4-8kg).
I found them on the Incy Wincy website and paid £7.55 for one nappy (free p&p).
My nappy arrived in a couple of days and we couldn't wait to try it out. The outer fabric looks just like swimsuit material. Inside, the lining looks similar and there's a plasticy type of material between the two. The nappy arrived in a strong plastic bag with handles and poppers, the idea being that it's a hygienic place to store your nappy. Maybe that is so, but I personally wouldn't bother.
I slid the nappy onto my daughter and was pleased to note that there is a drawstring around the waist. My daughter is quite skinny and I had worried that the nappy might just simply drop off her, but the drawstring solved this problem.
What concerned me a little was the fact that there is absolutely no padding in the nappy to absorb wee (whereas disposable nappies do have some absorbancy). The elastic around the legs fitted snuggly but not too tightly and in older babies, I have no doubt that any poos would be contained. However, my daughter is not on solid food yet and her poos are still quite liquid (sorry), so I do worry that if she did decide to evacuate, she might leak. Also, removing the nappy after such an incident would be very messy as it would have to be pulled down rather than opened up (I'll leave the consequences of that one to your imagination!).
These nappies can be machine washed at 40 degrees and Floaties advise that they shouldn't be tumble dried (you wouldn't need to, they dry so quickly).
In conclusion, the nappy looks good on, is a reasonable price, fulfills my washable needs and fits well. I'm still undecided as to how it would cope with a runny poo!!

Oh no, nothing that makes poo nappies harder work is for me, it's bad enough that my baby has abnormally long arms, you can picture the scene I'm sure x
