Is it mere coincidence that one of the major disciplines in Athletics is "throwing"? maybe they should add " shooting" to the list.
Cheating in athletics is nothing new. The ancient Greeks took pills and potions to make them faster, to reduce pain etc and throughout the history of contest ( "Athlon" in Greek I believe)it has raised its head.Look at the young ladies of Eastern Europe and other countries whose sexual development was repressed chemically to enhance their gymnastic prowess and how the Tour De France has shamed itself almost into oblivion. Competitors have always striven to gain the edge and always will - some within the laws other otherwise. So is there more of it or is it simply being detected more efficiently?
Drugs have become the pariah of sport, killing athletes, careers and credibility. We abhor the cheats - we want a level playing field. Christine Ohurogu acts as an example of how a reputation can be partly spoilt by indirectly cheating - missing drug tests. Officially, sheis not guilty of cheating, but by missing 3 tests she gives the appearance of hiding something, the media and sporting bodies having a lack of trust for her, and rightly so. Can a professional sportswoman REALLY forget 3 drug tests? OK I forget where my glasses and my car keys are on a regular, frequent and more than daily basis. But no-one is going to ban me from my favourite sport ( watching sport on TV) or destroy my ambitions in quite the same way.
World doping games? The sporting bodies claim that all athletes will either be caught out before during or after events. Is this akin to butchers praising the virtue of meat? The investigators are always going to be one step behind the bio-chemists on this one. Testosterone? As levels vary substantially between individuals and even the same person as their bodily cycles wind there way how can it be proved that no unauthorised injections have taken place.
Maybe it is time to allow the taking of performance-enhancing drugs ( or any other come to think of it) and let those who wish to destroy their lives have their few minutes of fame. If we assume some are going to get away with let's level the playing field.
I hereby propose that we have 2 sets of games. Those for the dope-free and the others? They must be the dopes!
Once this has been moved, let me know and I'll re-rate.
