Flora's Lot

Advantages: Nice easy read
Disadvantages: Not a book with a lot of depth or any plot twists.

The Plot

Flora's Lot is the story of Flora Stanza a young single Londoner who inherits part of an auction house after the death of her uncle. Having no real ties in London she decides to pack up and move to the country to find out a little more about the business she has inherited. Problem is that all Flora knows about the antique business is what she's picked up on programmes like the Antiques Roadshow. Floras' meddling in the business ...
...Charles and his fiancée Annabelle. They want to buy her out and send her back to London but Flora isn't prepared to give in that easily.

Flora and her cat who is about to have kittens moves into a neglected holiday cottage owned by Annabelle which is in the middle of nowhere. It's far removed from her city life with the bars and clubs, here all Flora has for entertainment is the village pub and the local choir. She then sets about ... more

Naked tai chi and a country auction house

Advantages: enjoyable read, good for the beach
Disadvantages: a bit predictable, some characters a little 2 dimensional

...lives happily ever after. Flora's lot is no exception but as ever Ffordes latest offering is an enjoyable read and if you are looking for a gentle piece of chick lit, worth a look. Flora Stanza is a late twenties London lass who has had the good fortune to inherit just over half of the family Auction house business, Stanza and Stanza from her Uncle. However, on leaving her London life and moving to the country to start working in the business, the ...
...would have hoped for. Her distant cousin Charles appears to take an instant dislike to her, while his stuff up fiance Annabelle is positively hostile. To make matters worse, the cottage she rents from Annabelle is miles from anywhere and her car has broken down, and there is a poet come artist who practices tai chi naked in garden already squatting in the house. Gradually Flora learns more about the Auction house business, makes several friends ...

City girl turns country girl auctioneer!

Advantages: Pleasant story, nice characters
Disadvantages: A tad predictable

I have been buying Katie Fforde's books in charity shops for a while and I have finally got round to reading this one. My opinions of Fforde's books have been mixed so far, I have loved some and not others, but this was one of her better ones. So here goes my review at last! *The Story* The novel is based around the character Flora Stanza, hence the title of the book. She decides to upsticks and move away from her home in the city to the country ...
...left to her in a family will. When she arrives she meets her snotty cousin Charles and his snobby stuck-up fiancee Annabelle. The pair do not give Flora a warm wecome, telling her it would be better to sell her half of the business to Annabelle, something Flora is uninterested in. They reluctantly let live in Annabelle's summer cottage in the middle of nowhere. However, at the company of Stanza and Stanza, Flora makes her first friend, Geoffrey, ...

ANOTHER BOOK I DIDN'T FINI....

Advantages: Er...
Disadvantages: Boring, boring

I?ll cut straight to the chase?. this book bored me so much I actually didn?t finish it. I tried, God knows, I tried. I considered whether it would be fair of me to do a review on a book I hadn?t finished but then I thought that anybody considering buying it really needed to know the worst about it. After all, it?s only my opinion. Others have enjoyed it. Firstly, I will say that I have read all of Katie Fford?s previous books and, apart from Flora?s Lot (which I couldn?t be bothered to finish, either) each has been a delight, in its own charming way. Charming is the operative word when describing Katie Fford?s books. She writes extremely well, in a cosy, curling up by the fire with a hot chocolate, kind of way. Her central characters are always women, usually in their mid-30s, mostly middle-class and all looking for love ...
