I make up one of these every year and, while it can be a chore, the results are well worth the bother. Try one on your patio, or wherever, and you will be the envy of all your visitors.
You need 5 or 6 plant containers, preferably of the same design but not all that important as they won`t be seen after a few weeks, each one should be a couple of sizes smaller than the one before it.
Place the largest in your selected location and place a couple of house bricks in the bottom to give it some stability. Fill up to within 3" or so of the rim with compost and be sure to add some water retaing gel and slow release fertilizer. I start with a 24" diameter planter.
Centre the next container on the top pressing it down a couple of inches or so into the top of the compost. Add a couple of handfulls of pebbles, top up with compost, some water retaining gel and slow release fertilizer. Now you have the idea just carry on till your tower is 5 or 6 planters high.
You will be left with a 3 or 4" border round each planter for your plants. Make your own selection of trailing plants and away you go.
I use a mixture of, million bells, cascade lobelia, impatiens, verbena and a couple of the small flowered fuschia such as Harry gray.

I feel the type of compost would help and also how often you have to water and feed. Norman
