Advantages: Silent, Reliable Disadvantages: Has to be taken out and cleaned very regularly
I had a couple of weeks leave in August and the weather was so bad that my partner and I decided to start a project. We decided on an tropical aquarium!

We paid around £32 for the pump (although if you shop around, you can pay anything from £22 to £50 for the same pump).

I had a couple of weeks leave in August and the weather was so bad that my partner and I decided to start a project. We decided on an tropical aquarium!
We bought a 4 foot tank second hand, complete with pump, lights and thermometer for £89. Needless to say, the equipment was old, although the tank was in very good condition. We bought a new light and replaced the pump then added the water. After a week we added a few fish and then sat back to watch!!
Unfortunately, as the set-up was new, the pump didn't seen to be coping too well, so we visited our local pet shop who recommended the Fluval 4 Internal Filter. We paid around £32 for the pump (although if you shop around, you can pay anything from £22 to £50 for the same pump).
The Fluval 4 is recommended for tank sizes up to 4 foot. It is a 220-240 volt pump and is a biological filter that works exceedingly well. It is exceptionally quiet, efficient and powerful. It uses polyester filtration pads together with 2 foam pads. You can also buy a charcoal filter pad for use after using medication in the water.
One of the most helpful items it has is a 'clogging indicator'. This consists of a yellow button which, if it depresses, indicates that the filter needs cleaning immediately.
We found that, as long as we clean the filter during each water change, there are no problems. The one time we didn't clean the filter, the clogging indicator depressed, so we did learn our lesson!
The polyester pads and the foam pads are available on their own and cost around £5.99 for the polyester pads (pack of 4) and £6.50 for the foam pads (pack of 4).
Thanks to the advice we were given and the trouble-free running of the Fluval 4, our fish are very healthy (and, I hope, happy!) and I would like to pass on the information and hope it helps anyone else thinking about starting a tropical set-up - or, come to that, anyone who wishes to improve their fishes' life!
Advantages: Extremely easy to set up and get going and keeps the tank clean, healthy and a fun environment Disadvantages: Probably a little more pricier but definately more hardy and reliable in the long run.
The Hagen Fluval family are, in my opinion, the best at keeping your fishtank crystal clean and healthy without all the palava that usually accompanies aquarium mechanics. The product is for larger fishtanks and is quite bulky however, the noise it emits isn't intrusive and the "gush" of water can easily be turned down to a lower speed so that it is merely a bubbling in the tank. It also sits on the horizon of the water and therefore produces a constant ... ...did was to install the Hagen Fluval 4. Although initially you may have to pay out a little more money and the filters themselves are not peanuts it - it is reliable and well worth the money! You wont have to replace these for many, many years and they are so sturdy and basically it is impossible for them to malfunction - if they do appear a little bit grouchy a simple rinse out is all that is needed and it is back to its best again. Virtually indestructable ...

Advantages: reliable, quiet and easy to use Disadvantages: none i have found
I have had no problems with this filter, it is quiet, has a indicator to let you know when it needs cleaning.
It has a suction cup that attaches on the side of your tank, for easy removal. The only problem i have had is it sometimes catches baby fry in, so i keep them in a seperate tank untill big enough
It also has different filter settings, can be high or low.
It is pretty straight forward to fit together, and you get supplied with 2 different ... ...this filter 1.
