The cost may depend on where you buy them.
Specsavers do good deals on contact lenses and have always given me good service. Worth a try I think. When you go to your optician they will be keen to help you find the right lenses for you. Make sure you have a good trial first before you decide.
Background to the world of contact lenses: =================================
I'll give you the background to the modern lenses in the hope that any of you who tried lenses and gave up a few years ago might be tempted to try again. Others of you may never have tried them and may be contemplating the first step towards freedom from specs.
First there were spectacles: -------------------------------------- I have been wearing glasses for shortsightedness (myopia) since I was 7 and it has not always been easy. When you are a child you are teased, then as an adult you are either thought bookish, or standoffish (because people cannot see your eyes, and cannot easily see your expressions). You never feel fashionable, and since specs cost a lot of money you only usually have one pair. There are other disadvantages to wearing glasses, the glasses themselves can be very expensive, especially if you have a high prescription lens and need antireflective coatings, lightweight lenses etc. Sunglasses are tricky, with clip-ons, or you have to buy prescription sunglasses and they are expensive. Swimming is difficult with glasses, sunbathing (or even just walking around in the sun) can give you panda eyes with lines at the sides of your head. Driving is also tricky with glasses because of the blind spots that you have with glasses.
Then there were contact lenses: -------------------------------------------- Contact lenses resolve many of these problems. Particularly, because they are on your eyes not on your head, you only have to move your eyes around to see instead of moving your whole head - amazing the difference this makes when driving!
When contact lenses first came on the market there were hard lenses (like little flat thin pieces of glass) or semi-hard, which were not much better. They used to reckon that you would get used to wearing them after a month. I tried this, the month was hell, sore eyes, watering eyes, sore lids. Needless to say I gave up with those.
A few years later (in the 1970s) semi-permeable and soft lenses came onto the market. They were much more comfortable and easy to wear. They did however cost an awful lot of money. I think I was paying £125 per year for one pair, and you had to clean them daily. With the insurance plan you were allowed one or two replacement lenses each year, as long as you had accidentally damaged them (not worn them out). The cost of the solutions was about £30 per month, so as you see they were incredibly expensive. I tried these and wore them for a few years but gave up when I had my children as the lenses were too much trouble to clean and cost too much.
Then along came The 21st Century ------------------------------------------------
Fanfare! - and along came daily disposable lenses.
Now my eyes are really bad (-9.5 in my left eye and -10 in my right eye) and amazingly I am back with contact lenses. I have pretty much totally converted onto Focus Dailies. The reasons for this are convenience, excellent vision, and affordability.
Cost ====
I pay a monthly direct debit of £19 and I get a 60 day supply sent to me by post every three months. I went for this quantity because I thought that I wouldn't wear them at weekends to give my eyes a rest. That hasn't worked out like that because I see so much better with them than with my glasses, and they are so much more comfortable than my glasses, that I want to wear them at weekends too. I manage to use fewer of them by cleaning and reusing them just in the same way that we used to do with the old contact lenses. Note: the manufacturers do not recommend this, so neither can I. When I need to I re-use a lens for three or four days, (cleaning them and sterilising them with either two-step or all in one lens cleaners for soft lenses).
Packaging ========
The lenses are packaged in individual sealed blister packs filled with sterile saline solution to keep them sterile until use, in strips of five, and packed in boxes of 30. They are made of 31% nelfilcon A, and 69% water in an isotonic phosphate-acetate buffered saline. The saline may contain up to 0.002% poloxamer in order to make the saline act like a lubricant for your eyes. It is very convenient to take just a few on holiday, or spares to work, leave some in the car etc. No more need for large heavy bottles of sterilising fluids.
Use ===
I am describing how you use these so that any of you thinking about using contact lenses for the first time can see how easy it really is.
If like me you are blind as a bat without your glasses you will keep a pair on your bedside table. Use these to find your was to the bathroom, where your box of nice new contact lenses is kept.
Have your bottle of saline solution (obtained from the chemists) handy in case you need to rinse your contact lens (only needed if you drop the lens or get fluff on it). Wash your hands and dry them on a fluff-free towel (otherwise you'll get bits of fluff on the lenses, into your eye, and it will hurt).
Take a lens out of its box, one for each eye. Make sure you know which is the one for the right and the left eye, if they are different prescriptions.
The optician will have taught you how to put the lenses in. (This is the bit that lens newbies fear the most, but it is actually really easy after the first once or twice). I take the lens out of its packaging and balance it on the tip of my right index finger. Then use the left hand first finger to lift up the lid of the eye, and the second finger to pull don the lower lid. Move the lens towards the open eye, keeping if facing flat on to the eye (it is easier to tip your head down at this point so that the lens is parallel to the washbasin so it is less likely to fall off your finger). With a slight rocking motion of your right finger lay the lens onto the eye. You will find that after you touch the edge it will probably fall naturally onto the eye. Blink, and there you are - one lens inserted. Repeat with the other eye.
I wear my lenses all day, often up to 18 hours. Sometimes my eyes may feel a little dry, and if they do I use a proprietary comfort drop from the chemists (make sure you get one for soft lenses).
In the evening, I go to the bathroom to collect my specs that I have left there in the morning, go back to my bedroom, put specs on bedside table ready for the morning, then remove the lenses. This is easy, just by pulling the eyelids to the side the contact lenses fall out. No cleaning needed, new lenses are in the bathroom for the morning.
Advantages: ==========
· Very hygienic and good for your eyes · May give you better vision than glasses (apparently they float on tears and that is why the vision is better) · No sore nose from glasses pinching, and no rubbed ears · No solutions to buy (unless I want to re-use them - not recommended by manufacturer) · No time wasted cleaning lenses at night and neutralising in the morning · Very comfortable, often I forget they are in. (I once fell asleep with them in (after party) - definitely not recommended because your eyes dry up and go sticky, the germs will grow in the lenses, ugh! ) · Not overly expensive. OK so they are not cheap, but then neither are specs · I'm not a speccy four-eyes any more · People can see my brown eyes · I can see in the rain (Yippee) · I can see when I come into a warm room from the cold outside - no more steamed up glasses · I can wear ordinary sunglasses · I can toboggan without fear of my specs flying off (and play other sports)
Disadvantages: =============
· Tricky to get out of the blister pack, sometimes they tear, or are folded and then you tear them trying to unfold them. With practice this happens rarely · They can be inside out. This is difficult to tell until you put them in your eye and find they are not comfortable as they should be. Take them out and reverse them to sort out the problem · Sometimes dust may blow into your eye, or an eyelash may get beneath the lens. Again, this is remedied by taking the lens out, rinsing it with saline solution, then replacing the lens.
Comparison with Other Daily Disposable Lenses =======================================
I have used Acuvue lenses as well but have gone back to Focus dailies. They seem to be more comfortable, less likely to dry out and less expensive. The cost may depend on where you buy them. Specsavers do good deals on contact lenses and have always given me good service. Worth a try I think. When you go to your optician they will be keen to help you find the right lenses for you. Make sure you have a good trial first before you decide.
Are you convinced? I hope so. They are definitely worth a shot.
Advantages: comfortable, no cleaning required, easy to use Disadvantages: price
I have been wearing Ciba Focus Dailies for the last 3 years and would be lost without them. My eyesight isn't particularly bad, but it's bad enough to need to wear glasses for driving and watching TV. I've never really got on with wearing my glasses - I don't like the way that it's blurry around the outside of the lenses, as it makes me feel like I'm living in a bubble. My glasses also pinch the sides of my nose, so are not that comfortable to wear. ... ...**What are they?**
Ciba Focus Dailies are daily disposable contact lenses. You can wear them for up to 12 hours and then after that you simply throw them away and replace them with a fresh pair the following day. They have a unique ultra-thin edge design that is designed to make them comfortable throughout the day.
Daily Disposable contact lenses were first introduced by Johnson & Johnson in 1987 and were a revolution in how consumers wore contact ...

Advantages: Very convenient Disadvantages: a bit expensive (but they're worth it!)
...that day. At my opticians, Focus Dailies cost about £35 -40 a month, which you make think it is a tad steep, but believe me, if you have had the hassle of glasses it is a small price to pay. It depends on the opticians but you can usually get a deal if you buy six months worth of contact lenses in advance.
The main benefit for me is the ability these lens give me to put spontaneity into my social life. Before contact lenses I could not go out shopping ... ...depended on whether I had my glasses with me. With these I just keep the contacts in all the time, so I can do what I want when I want. They are easier to clean than non-daily contact lenses, because you DON’T have to clean them. Instead of messing around with cleaning lotions, all you do is pop them in in the morning and take them out at night. I found that even in a smoke filled atmosphere, i.e. a pub, my lenses were not irritated what so ...

A few months ago I changed to Ciba daily disposables, after wearing monthly lenses for a few years. (before that we used to have to wear the lenses for 2 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
These daily disposables are great, if your like me, and like an easy life and convenience. Everyday you just wear a brand new pair of lenses and throw them away when you take them out.
The fact that you wear a new pair everyday, is so much more hygenic, as it reduces the risk ... ...eye. I pay a monthly direct debit of £35 and I collect a 3 months supply a time. The lenses are packaged in sealed units and boxed in 30's (a month in a box). No more need to have to pick up heavy supplies of cleaning fluids!!!! Hooray!!!!!! and no need to pack all the cleaning fluids when I go on holiday! an even bigger HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Be careful when taking the lenses out of the sealed units as they can have a tendancy to tear easily as ...

...i should try using the Focus Daily contacts.
Expectations (bear in mind i'm a total wuss!)
Well after my research on the net i couldn't help but notice the amount of people that mentioned their lenses had torn in their eye and they had to fish the halves out, sounds horrible!!! It also seemed from my research that people found the lenses should be worn for around 10-12 hours at a time and then taken out, they also mentioned that the lens quite ... ...(my current monthly's and the focus dailies). He told me that one problem that people have with the monthly's is that they may not form a complete suction onto the eye unlike the dailies; he said to think of flexing the monthlies as like flexing a phone book and to think of flexing the dailies as like flexing cling film. when i opened the first daily lens i didnt even realise that i had scooped it up onto my finger; they feel really slimey and seem ...

...Ciba Vision and are called Focus Dailies. I notice there are a few reviews of these but I am going to add my thruppenceworth anyway !
The optician reckoned I had very “tight eyelids/eyeballs”, cheeky git, and would struggle to find ones that were comfortable – however after trying a couple of pairs by different manufacturers, I found these to be very comfortable to wear – make sure you try the different brands as I certainly ... ...The Focus Dailies come in multiples of 30 lens packs i.e. you get two packs a left and a right and each contain 30 lenses. In theory this is therefore a 30 day supply if you use them everyday. As I still use my specs when I want to look intelligent (!?!) they last me a lot longer.
At the moment this costs £39.00 approximately. At £39.00 a month, the cost would soon stack up for regular users – though I have heard of a web site where they can ...
