Being a short-sighted Myopia sufferer contact lenses seemed like an obvious alternative to spectacles what with constantly losing or breaking them. Contact lenses eradicated this problem! Focus monthly's were the first brand of lenses I ever tried…not too expensive so as a student I could comfortably afford them. I must admit these lenses were quite comfortable…at first but due to the necessity of having to re-use and re-use them they had a tendency to fray round the edges, dry out and slightly deteriorate. If they hadn't been sterilised properly overnight and stored in the correct solution this felt on occasions like putting grit into your eye the following morning.
Focus monthly's are a product of Ciba Vision and retail at most opticians for about ten pounds a month (can be purchased in three month batches if more appropriate for the consumer) although prices can vary depending where bought and can be found at discounted prices on various optical websites. You will need to know the correct strength of lenses required if you intend to purchase online and check the diameter of the lenses as this plays a part in the overall comfort of it.
Lense strengths are in most circumstances predetermined by your optician with an eye test which lasts no longer than an hour. The general rule is the higher the number the stronger the prescription; '+' indicates a long-sighted sufferer and '-' in my case applies to the opposite…short sighted.
These lenses are clear in colour with a slight tint of blue which can be seen when held on an angle. They are normally packaged individually in a saline solution for hygiene purposes ensuring the lense stays soft and free of bacteria.
Because these are monthly lenses and must be re-used my optician stipulated I should only wear them for a maximum of twelve hours a day. This wasn't what I wanted to hear! Especially when it's the weekend and being the party animal that I am I'll be out most of the time. I won't have a chance to fiddle with lenses and revert back to my glasses. This is where the downfalls became apparent; the longer the lenses were in the more gritty, tired and dry my eyes felt and when it came to putting them back in the following day it was really quite uncomfortable. It was always such a treat when the end of the month arrived and I could start on a new pair. You immediately notice the difference. The softness. The ease of putting them in.
The worst I can report and I feel I must report it to give you a better understanding of this product comes in the summer months. In the summer I very often found the heat used to aggravate them a great deal and on numerous occasions my eyes became sore, itchy, tired and I'd experience a sore, red circle which appeared on my eyes around the edge of the lenses. I must admit this aided my decision to switch to dailies which in my opinion are much more comfortable, more hygienic, easier to look after and wait for it…you guessed it…more expensive.
Overall Focus Monthly contact lenses are good value for money if you intend to use them correctly and limit your usage to a few hours a day. Don't wear them day in day out like I used to.
Oh and before I go I must mention the extra cost of saline solution which will need to be used every day to rinse, sterilise and disinfect them. Solution can cost anything from about ten pounds upwards per one month bottle although this can be cheaper when bought in bulk packs of three which retail at about twenty five pounds. Each bottle usually has a life span of just over a month so you might be able to stretch the solution a little longer than anticipated.
Advantages: Good quality lenses, reasonably priced Disadvantages: No good for people with dark coloured eyes; tint to the world that disappears after a while;
Basically Focus Monthly colour Lenses are good standard contact lenses, but the colour will not show up on brown eyes, something that was not pointed out to me when I bought these over the web. They probably work well for people with light colour eyes and probably make naturally green eyes look amazing, but there was not any noticable difference for my very darkbrown eyes.
One thing I noticed with them is that just after you put them in the world ... ...I have used the normal focus Lenses before so I knew that they could be trusted as a brand. I've used them for years and I wouldn't change them and for those people whose eye colour will be enhanced by this they'll get a bargain-as this is one of the cheaper lenses (with good quality) they can buy. I bought these from the web-(www.lens-net.com) for £40 for 6 months supply (both eyes inc p+p). This is fine if you have recently been to your optician ...

Advantages: I can see! Cheap and easy to insert and remove Disadvantages: difficult to see if inside out or not, and v painful if they are!
I have been wearing glasses on and off since the age of 14, at the start just for watching TV and seeing into the distance. When I hit about 19, i had to start wearing them almost all the time, but vanity prevented me from wearing them on nights out, when I resorted to squinting. I had considered getting daily disposables as I knew I would only be wearing them a couple of days a month and would therefore not get the use out of monthlylenses. Also the idea of no cleaning appealed to me greatly, but I never seemed to get around to making the appointment at the opticians.
I noticed a few years later that an opticians near me was offering free eye tests and a free 1 month trial of daily disposable contactlenses (focus dailies) which I signed up for just before a foreign holiday. I was given a pack of 30 contactlenses for each eye ...
Advantages: Great alternative to glasses Disadvantages: A bit fiddly...as are most contact lenses, costly for regular wearers
and so wanted to be able to wear contactlenses rather than blindly stagger around without my glasses on, which would have been the alternative.
I returned to the opticians the following week after moistursing my eyes every day. He had another look at them and advised that I would be able to have contactlenses, but only Daily ones. My eyes were apparently naturally dry (I don't cry enough apparently!) and so the coulred monthly ones I had set my heart on were out of the question.
He chose Ciba Focus Dailies. These are daily disposable contactlenses. I had to get 2 different sets as my eyes are different (see beginning). It worked out at around £15.00 per box. Each box contacted 30 ContactLenses. I therefore had to purchase 2 boxes totalling £30. The two boxes would last me a month.
After purchasing my contactlenses, I ...
Advantages: Whenever your eyes are open you have perfect vison Disadvantages: A costly convenience
Like many people I am short sighted and first started wearing glasses when i was 13 which was many years ago!!
As i got older and became very vain i decided to take a trip to my local Specsavers to invest in contactlenses at the ripe old age of 17.
~~~~MY PREVIOUS LENSES~~~~
The thought of putting something in my eye on purpose was a bit daunting but i soon got the hang of putting the lenses in each morning and taking them out and cleaning them each evening.
My first contactlenses would be replaced every six months and i had to go through a regime of cleaning and disinfecting them daily and using protein remover weekly which was a bit of a drag but hey i looked cool with no specs!!
A few years ago i started to use monthly disposable lenses which came with a multi purpose solution which did everything. It cleaned ...
