Advantages: great selection, good variety Disadvantages: somehow mistitled, mostly traditional stuff
Rough Guide, best known for their budget travel guides, has been steadily expanding in other areas, and has been responsible for quite a few musical "guides" over the years.
This 1998 album, marketed as "Rough Guide to the Music of EasternEurope", does pretty much exactly what is says on the package: provides quite a wide ranging overview of folk and (occasionally) folk-inspired music of EasternEurope. This is an album that pretty much started my liking for "world music" coming from my part of the world, and despite its age it remains a good compilation which really does showcase the variety of what's on offer quite well.
One thing that this "Rough Guide" album needs is perhaps a better definition of what is considered EasternEurope: this is a surprisingly woolly category (I always remember somebody commenting than Poland ...
Advantages: Essential information, good maps Disadvantages: No photos, layout could be better
Once described as the "King of guidebooks", Fodor's produce a huge range of full sized and pocket travel guides for the whole world. The series I am talking about here is the Gold Series, and the book I have concentrated on is The US & British Virgin Islands. Although I am looking at a specific book, as far sa I can tell, the format of guidebooks is similar for each country/city.
A softback book, not pocket sized, but none-the-less small enough to fit into your hand luggage, it contains about 150 pages. This is another guidebook range that has chosen not to include photographs, and although I love to look at them - it's not the end of the world for me. There are a few colour advertisements for a well-known credit card company in the center, and near the back - I assume this helped pay for the research and production of the guide ...
Advantages: clearly laid out, a good read Disadvantages: Bulky and focused mainly on popular destinations
The lonely planet book of EasternEurope is big, but for the sheer amount of information it contains it has to be. I used it for Croatia,Slovenia,Hungary,Poland,Slovakia and the Czech Republic and for these countries it was certainly helpful. The brief country history makes for a good read on long train journeys and the maps proved indispensable when arriving late at night when the tourist information office was closed. Also included with the book is a short phrase section for each country which I found very useful, even a few words can make all the difference when travelling especially in Slovakia where almost nobody spoke English. I found myself practising my "hello's" and "where is the toilet please?" before i even crossed the border. People are a lot more welcoming if you attempt to learn their language even if you fail miserably ...
