The Bairns is an unsual album to listen to, taking you on (for lack of any better comparison) a roller-coaster of emotion, from the first track to the last. With haunting voices and perfect harmonies, Rachel Unthank and The Winterset, a quartet comprising two extremely talented sisters and their friends hailing from the North-east of England, deliver a provoking, if not flawless, catalogue of traditional folk pieces. Particularly interesting are ... ...pieces of music. For example, I Wish, I Wish, which has been covered by many artists in the past, predominantly Kate Rusby's more upbeat take, has been turned into a melancholy, heart-breaking melody much more suited to the lyrics being sung. They also include a collection of "Lulls" which vary from 20 second accapella songs to the 7 minute variation offered at the end of album, with complex vocal harmonies and instrumental backing. Perhaps a tease to future stardom

Advantages: Weel written, heartfelt, folk-pop
Disadvantages: nothing major enough to say
Like many new artists and bands Teddy Thompson really got his biggest break by appearing on Jools Holland's program. This is, indeed, where I came accross this outstanding folk artist.
The son of folk ledgends, Linda and Richard Thompson, it seemed almost inevitable that Teddy would follow in the family business. Like the Wainrights before him the second generation of family folk is much more mainstream, with a contemporary production. This allows ... ...listeners; and not just the folk niche of their parents.
The record itself is a very light, melodic sound, that really allows his voice to shine through. The rough, passionate, and well performed vocals lend themselves to the expertly constructed and thought through lyrics. The first track; Shine So Bright, seems to lead us to belive Thompson has a quest for stardom. But this hasnt meant that the record has turned into a piece of over-produced, ...
