Perhaps a tease to future stardom
Review of Separate Ways - Teddy Thompson by
TeddyT
Advantages: Weel written, heartfelt, folk-pop
Disadvantages: nothing major enough to say
Like many new artists and bands Teddy Thompson really got his biggest break by appearing on Jools Holland's program. This is, indeed, where I came accross this outstanding folk artist.
The son of folk ledgends, Linda and Richard Thompson, it seemed almost inevitable that Teddy would follow in the family business. Like the Wainrights before him the second generation of family folk is much more mainstream, with a contemporary production. This allows ... ...listeners; and not just the folk niche of their parents.
The record itself is a very light, melodic sound, that really allows his voice to shine through. The rough, passionate, and well performed vocals lend themselves to the expertly constructed and thought through lyrics. The first track; Shine So Bright, seems to lead us to belive Thompson has a quest for stardom. But this hasnt meant that the record has turned into a piece of over-produced, ...

Great folk from this new talent
Review of Scissors In My Pocket - Polly Paulusma by
bluebobski
Advantages: Relaxing, chilled-out, and with good lyrics to boot
Disadvantages: Quite downbeat at times, but not necessarily a disadvantage!
I stumbled across Polly Paulusma after downloading a single of hers for free, "Over The Hill", and it was on hearing this song which persuaded me to buy the album.
The album is quite simply breathtaking! Each song has enough individuality to stand out on its own, which I have found to be the opposite with many folk artists, and as such it becomes harder to pick a favourite song from the album. The lyrics on each track are of a decent quality and ... ...found all too frequently with many modern artists, but they are sung beautifully and seemingly effortlessly by the magnificent Paulusma. For me, the standout tracks are "Over The Hill", "Mea Culpa", and "I Was Made To Love You", but to be fair they are all worthy of mentioning. I think Of Paulusma as a female Damien Rice, and hopefully she will someday rise to the same levels of fame as he has. ...

Thea doesnt lie
Review of Liejacker - Thea Gilmore by
jcneil
Advantages: Great voice, Lyrics
Disadvantages: None
...age. Her eighth album entitled Liejacker is one of her best and has been critically acclaimed by the music press who consider her to be the greatest british songwriter of her generation.
You may have read my review of London's Bloomsbury Theatre where I saw Thea Gilmore in concert and met her in the foyer after the gig where she signed my copy of this album. I requested this album on dooyoo So without further ado here is my review of Thea Gilmore's ... ...May.
**Liejacker**
1. Old Soul
This is a nice duet with Dave McCabe of The Zutons, the track opens with a gentle guitar and then Thea's distinctive vocals come in with the beat of the drum coming in gently every few seconds. The addition of Dave McCabe works really well as he offers up an emotive clear vocal. A wonderful start.
2. Black Letter
This is a great track which has a darker feel to the opening track Old Soul. I love the Cello in this ...

Different....in an AMAZING way!
Review of Greatest Hits Of The 20th Century - Bela Fleck & The Flecktones by
JasD11
Advantages: Amazing tracks, great musicians!
Disadvantages: Communication
Bela Fleck & The Flecktones...an amazing array of just about everything you can put into a band while keeping it edgy, listenable, and exciting for the listener. This album in particular I picked up a few months back, and it's barely left my player since. I just can't get over the musicianship and technical work put into each song with such detail. If you enjoy Bela Fleck or even just heard a few songs and want to hear more go grab this album quick, ... ...--Sinister Minister--
Starts the album simple and funky enough with the work of the over-talented Victor Wooten on bass. Which is quickly joined by Bela Fleck on banjo and the ever elusive 'drumitar' worked by Future man. Which will set you in the groove of the song, and then enters an amazingly simple yet ever so catchy harmonica line that quickly becomes the basis of the song. Throughout the song each player shows real style and class and really ...

skye-angel_85
Advantages: 37 awe inspiring songs
Disadvantages: None
...double collection is Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison.
It was recorded in 1968 (well before i was born). This was the time of Presidential Abdication, The Vietnam War and the continuing Civil Rights struggle. It was also the same year Mr. Johnny Cash married Miss June Carter, his saviour. This cd really opened my eyes to what life was like "back in the day". With 19 great songs including "Folsom Prison Blues", "Cocaine Blues" and the fantastic "Jackson" ... ...The Second is at San Quentin, it was recorded a year after At Folsom, it too has some wonderfull songs including "Big River" "Starkville City Jail" which Johnny tells a story about the song before he sings it ,and of course the world famous "Ring Of Fire" and "Walk The Line. The Songs on this cd are:-
1 Big River
2 I still miss someone
3 Wreck of the old 97
4 I walk the line
5 Darlin' companion
6 I don't know where I'm bound
